Sometimes Books You Loved as a Teen Don’t Age Well

The Dead Boy Detectives by Jill Thompson

January 2, 2025 by GentleRain 2 Comments

I have very mixed feelings about this book upon rereading it as an adult. I remember loving this in high school and came across my old copy when I was home for the holidays. While this was written and illustrated by Jill Thompson, it is based off the Sandman characters by Neil Gaiman and he consulted on it. I’m not someone who will never read work by an author accused of awful crimes because I feel like it can better inform my understanding of the […]

Two books, one review

The Graveyard Book Graphic Novel: Volume 1 by Neil Gaiman

The Graveyard Book Graphic Novel: Volume 2 by P. Craig Russell

January 27, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Graveyard Book Volume 1 and Volume 2 are based on the Neil Gaiman middle reader novel of the same name. I have not read a lot of Gaiman, but what I have, I have not necessarily loved. (Though the movie Coraline was fun and the audio of it was an experience.) However, P. Craig Russell’s graphic novel adaptation shows how Gaiman’s reputation might have been earned. The two volumes are an interestingly wild ride. I wish I had found a complete one volume (hence […]

Wonder Woman: The True Amazon

June 11, 2017 by The Chancellor Leave a Comment

With the new Wonder Woman movie coming out soon, I wanted to brush up on my knowledge of Diana. I happened upon this graphic novel in my library and thought I would pick it up. I’ll be honest, besides the 1970’s show, which I think is the only time Wonder Woman has had her own screen time, I didn’t know anything about her. The graphic novel roots Diana’s story in ancient Greece and the war between Herakles and the Amazon’s queen. They end up moving […]

Beautiful tribute to Wonder Woman

April 19, 2017 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

For years my only knowledge of Jill Thompson was as the artist for the run of Sandman that is collected in Brief Lives, my favorite book of the series.  In 2015 she was a special guest of San Diego Comic Con and we had the pleasure of attending her panel.  Her panel was the first one of the day in that room and she was worried people wouldn’t come, so she brought doughnuts for those who did come.  In person she is funny, sweet and a […]
