The more real they are, the more terrifying I find them. So I read through all of the “Getaway” collection the other day and thought some stories hit harder than others. You know that crawling feeling you get at the back of your neck sometimes, when the tiny hairs hidden there start screaming at you that something is off? I got that in the opening pages of Unspeakable Things, as the main character Cassie innocently describes her dad massaging her older sister’s shoulders over a family game of monopoly. I’m not sure if I liked this book or not.

This is a strange book.  It’s basically an adult thriller told through the eyes of a pre-teen girl.  At times it’s hard to remember that the main character and the voice of the story is only 12.  At other times it’s glaringly obvious. There are basically two stories here.  They both hold approximately equal weight throughout the book.  Unfortunately only one is truly resolved at the end.
