Mad Mabel by Sally Hepworth
A book about a female serial killer? Um, not really. This is the story of a lonely little girl who bad things happen to and she turns into a lonely old woman. But heartwarming? I’m giving this a grudging 3.75 stars, bumped up 0.25 from 3.5 because it wrung salty tears out of me. They were dripping down my face, but I was upset about it. This book was so great until the ending, when it did three things I didn’t like (and almost never […]
Mad Mabel by Sally Hepworth
Eighty-one year old Elsie Fitzpatrick lives on a quiet street in a quiet suburb of Melbourne. She has petty squabbles with her neighbors but nothing major. She’d prefer it if her neighbor’s dog would stop going into her yard and if Persephone, another neighbor’s precocious seven-year-old, would stop coming over uninvited, but that’s about the scope of it. Until a death in the neighborhood reveals to Elsie that her long-buried secret is actually public knowledge. As her neighbors reveal themselves to be wary and suspicious […]
Mad Mabel by Sally Hepworth
Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. Honestly this was really well done, but the biggest issue I had was how slow parts were before things moved faster and we had all of the threads that were confusing at first tied up. I also think the ending with a character and someone we were introduced to via Elsie, otherwise known as Mad Mabel was just a bit much for me. But I did love the […]
Death Row by Freida McFadden
The Ex-Wives Club by Sally Hepworth
False Note by David Lagercrantz
The Skydivers by Chris Bohjailian
Good Neighbors by Chad Zunker
Small Things by Wanda M. Morris
4 stars for this one. I thought the first story in the “Alibis Collection” was really strong and honestly the best out of the bunch. I thought that McFadden actually stretched herself in this one in a good way. I didn’t see the twists coming and loved how she tied things up her. “Death Row” follows a woman named Talia Kemper has been on death row for years after being convicted of the murder of her husband. We find Talia remembering things before she was […]
The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth
The Soulmate tells the tale of married couple who have recently relocated to a cliffside home overlooking the pacific ocean. There is only one drawback to their panoramic view: the drop. The drop is where people who reach the end of their tether decide to end their lives. Gabe has become a local celebrity by intervening and helping these lost souls find the will to go on, and his wife, Pippa, couldn’t be prouder. Together with their two children, they seem to have an idyllic […]
The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth
Please note that I received this via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. Well not quite up to par with Hepworth’s other works. And it’s really only because the back and forth between two women in separate timelines just didn’t work after a while as well as the lack of depth on some of the characters especially after a bunch of things get revealed. For example, I get why Hepworth included Amanda’s point of view, but after a while it added nothing […]
