CBR Bingo: Not My Wheelhouse, I Love This and Reader’s Choice

99 Percent Mine by Sally Thorne

Good in Bed by Jennifer Weiner

Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

October 23, 2019 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

CBR 11 Bingo- Not My Wheelhouse 99 Percent Mine – Sally Thorne I chose a romance novel, Thorne’s The Hating Game, for last year’s Not My Wheelhouse and while I enjoyed it the romance genre floodgates were not opened for me so I chose another kissing book for the same square this year. Darcy Barrett and her twin brother, Jamie, inherited their grandmother’s tear-down of a cottage which has caused some estrangement between the siblings. Their childhood best friend, Tom, has been hired as the contractor to flip the house before sale as well as something of a go-between for the […]

A Tale of Two Sisters

Mrs. Everything by Jennifer Weiner

August 8, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Trigger warning: Rape Wow. So this was good. I think that some parts were a bit too long, but I can’t really complain about that when I think that Weiner did such a great job with character development along and weaving all of the plot elements together. Weiner also includes certain pop culture and historical incidents (the Kennedy assassination, student protests, war in Vietnam, the me too movement, and even Hillary Clinton running for President of the United States) that are not front and center to the story, but still intriguing to read about with these characters. I of course […]

Page Turner Marred By Homophobia

Good in Bed by Jennifer Weiner

September 24, 2017 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: Someone looking for a quick read that has only a marginally absurd premise In a nutshell: Journalist Cannie Shapiro deals with many different issues, kicked off by the fact that her ex is writing a magazine column about her. Line that sticks with me: Nothing stood out enough to underline. Why I chose it: I became aware of Ms. Weiner because of the chapter about her in Too Fat Too Slutty Too Loud and thought it’d be fun to check out her work. Starting with her first book. Review: There is so much to enjoy about this book, […]

“Dear Y.A., don’t let the bastards get you down! Your friend, Chick Lit”

Hungry Heart: Adventures in Life, Love, and Writing by Jennifer Weiner

December 4, 2016 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

When I was in college I didn’t read for “fun” a lot. Between the required reading I had for the handful of literature classes I took, the assigned reading from textbooks, drinking and dorm wide Grey’s Anatomy viewing parties there wasn’t a lot of time. Chick-lit slowly welcomed me back into the world of reading for pleasure. Jennifer Weiner, Lauren Weisberger, Jen Lancaster and Anna Maxted reminded me that reading was fun and my bookshelves are still dotted in pink and green from that time in my life. Hungry Heart is Jennifer Weiner’s first memoir and while I’ll probably always prefer her […]

It’s no Good in Bed…

Who Do You Love by Jennifer Weiner

August 25, 2016 by The Mama Leave a Comment

This made the rounds a few weeks ago (baxlala and Jenny S posted reviews), and I pretty much agree with them, that this was good, but not great, and certainly not as great as I’ve come to expect from Weiner. Rachel, who was born with a heart defect, is a veteran of hospitals, and she’s wandering about one night at eight years old when she meets Andy, also eight, in the ER waiting room. Andy’s been brought in because he fell off of a hotel balcony and broke his arm. Andy’s all alone; the hotel staff was unable to locate […]

You say, the price of my love’s not a price that you’re willing to pay

Who Do You Love? by Jennifer Weiner

July 25, 2016 by baxlala 8 Comments

This is the third Jennifer Weiner book I’ve read, but the first that I’ve picked up in at least 10 years. I remember enjoying the other two, Good in Bed and In Her Shoes, which was later made into a movie with Toni Collette and Cameron Diaz that I have seen approximately seven times for some reason (not that it’s bad, I just don’t know why I’ve watched it so much). If Who Do You Love is ever made into a movie, I’m not sure I’d watch it once. I didn’t hate this book, I just felt meh about it, […]

Fate is a Funny Thing

Who Do You Love by Jennifer Weiner

July 24, 2016 by Jenny S 2 Comments

This latest novel by Jennifer Weiner was thoroughly readable and engaging as long as I squashed my inner cynic into a small ball and buried it deep in a drawer.  It tells the story of Rachel Blum and Andy Landis, who first meet when they are 8 years old.  Rachel is in a Florida hospital being treated for a heart condition that she has struggled with since birth.  Andy ends up in the E.R. of the same hospital with a broken arm. The accident happened while Andy, on vacation with his single mom, was left alone in the hotel room, […]

I Love The Author More Than The Book

Who Do You Love by Jennifer Weiner

February 5, 2016 by Doraemon 4 Comments

I love Jennifer Weiner. I love that she invents terms like Franzenfreude. And that she fights back against sexism in book reviews and isn’t afraid to name names. I love reading her essays and interviews and I have even watched her “vlog” on YouTube. I think she’s super smart and funny and I’m certain I would melt if I had the chance to meet her or listen to her speak live. While I’m a fan, it had been well over a decade since I had actually read one of her books. Last month I was reading her brilliant essay about […]
