It’s all Greek to Me

Atalanta by Jennifer Saint

November 25, 2025 by NatalieH Leave a Comment

I haven’t read many Greek mythology retellings, but the ones I have read so far, I’ve really enjoyed. Namely, Madeline Miller’s Circe and The Song of Achilles. I came across Atlanta, by Jennifer Saint, at a book sale recently, and figured it would be in a similar vein. Warning: I’m going to spoil most of the book’s plot points in this review. It’s a 2000+ year old myth, and the book doesn’t really change any of the main story beats. The titular Atalanta was abandoned […]

Ariadne by Jennifer Saint

Ariadne by Jennifer Saint

My one best friend is going to strangle me if I don’t finish this book and send it to her already. I got this with her two years ago and promised to send it. And honestly if it wasn’t for that and being on a nice long break before next Thursday, I would have probably just sent this thing to her without trying to read it. I am a sucker for Greek myths though and I heard this re-telling was good, but honestly it’s just […]

“What I did know was that I had hit upon a truth of womanhood; however blameless a life we led, the passions and the greed of men could bring us to ruin, and there was nothing we could do.”

Ariadne by Jennifer Saint

I’ve had a run of bad luck the past few years where the first book I pick to read ends up, at worst, pretty terrible, and at best, readable but not enjoyable. Unfortunately, Ariadne by Jennifer Saint falls into the latter. Since I spent a lot of 2023 reading and rereading Greek Mythological retellings (thank you Natalie Haynes and Madeline Miller among others), I honestly thought this would be a shoo-in as an easy read, my return to CBR, and jump starting my reading for […]

I think I’m swearing off Greek retellings from now on

Ariadna by Jennifer Saint

I think maybe Greek mythology retellings just aren’t for me. I don’t think it’ll surprise anyone that the main point of all [insert culture here] retellings is to rebalance the agency, and give some / a lot of it to the characters that have traditionally been second tier, aka the women. Spinning Silver is one of my favorite books of all time! And it probably benefits from being only tangentially related to an existing story, such that there’s a wide expanse of story space for Novik […]
