Poacher's Son by Paul Doiron

June 13, 2019 by Nyx Leave a Comment

For the past few years, my husband and I have made a concerted effort to be a family that goes away for week-long summer vacation. So we save up all year and spend the beginning of July in the sleepy Maine beach town my husband grew up going to as a child and teenager. I love it but each time we go I’m struck by how no matter how much we try to explore during each visit we can only scratch the surface of all the […]

I now walk into the wild

June 17, 2016 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

Into the Wild is a pretty well known non-fiction book that has been covered several times on CBR. It’s the fatal story of Chris McCandless/ Alexander Sumpertramp ‘s journey into the Alaskan bush. He is under-prepared and a few small mistakes lead to his untimely death. Jon Krakauer, a journalist, wrote the original article detailing the recovery of McCandless’ body; Into the Wild is his follow up. Chris graduated college and vaguely implied to his parents his intentions to go to law school- instead he […]

Somehow or other, I got conned in to agreeing to go camping in Denali during this trip. And not even in a cabin, but outside. In a tent. With a sleeping bag. On the ground. With, you know, bears and moose. I’ve gone nearly 40 years without peeing outside; I have a real fear that streak may […]

The Whole Story Behind “Into the Wild”

January 26, 2015 by Sophia Leave a Comment

For whatever reason, I have been incredibly moved and impressed by everything regarding the story of the life of Chris McCandless. It started with Into The Wild (1997) by Jon Krakauer. I am a huge fan of Krakauer and how he digs so far into the details to get a fair and honest picture of his subject without losing the emotional empathy that makes us connect in the first place. I will read anything by him. When I heard they were making a movie, I […]
