What was there before girls were on trains and gone?

Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough

May 20, 2019 by Melina Leave a Comment

Yet another book for the people who enjoyed Gone Girl and Girl on A Train.  I am actually far over seeking books out that say this on the cover because I’ve been burned. And also? Gone Girl was fun because it was new and different. It was fun deciding if I wanted to root for evil…but now? Old hat, I’ve read thousands of books for fans of GG and GoAT…none of them really seemed anything like that.  This is no exception, but I’m happy to […]

You Ever Get Tired of Being Who People Want You to Be, and Not Yourself?

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

June 6, 2018 by Lisa Bee 1 Comment

I’m a little late on boarding this train, aren’t I? So I’m sure most of you know the story already (mild spoilers abound in this review): I myself have seen the movie adaptation! But it was a conversation about said movie that made me want to actually read Gone Girl in the first place. Basically, the conversation boiled down to most people simply dismissing the character of Amy in the story as “crazy”. And while, no, I don’t agree with her actions and she does […]

The Gold Standard

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

May 4, 2018 by Caitlin_D 2 Comments

“Friends see most of each other’s flaws. Spouses see every awful last bit.” I read Gone Girl for CBR6 and have been comparing psychological thrillers to it since. I was beginning to wonder if I had made up how remarkable Gillian Flynn’s bone chilling drama was and holding lesser novels to an impossible standard. I wasn’t. I remained impressed with Flynn’s psychological mind fuck of a novel about a dysfunctional married couple whose secrets are exposed when the wife goes missing. Nick Dunne and his wife, Amy […]

If you like sociopaths and unreliable narrators, then have I got a book for you!

The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine

February 13, 2018 by scootsa1000 Leave a Comment

Amber wants nothing more than to live the way she thinks she deserves. She wants it all — wealth and jewels and real estate, with a rich handsome husband on her arm. In her mind, this dream life is owed to her, because her early life was one of poverty and despair. So just let her have this, ok? And it doesn’t matter if the house she wants has people living in it. Or if the man she wants is married to someone else. She […]

Rainbow Rowell is my spirit animal.

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

August 22, 2016 by ingres77 10 Comments

I am iridescent with joy. I am pregnant with wonder. Gestating within me is the belief that regardless of how much I love the book, if Rainbow Rowell is writing it, I will absolutely love the people she fills it with. When my egg hatches, I will be gifted with the certainty that Rainbow Rowell is my new favorite author. Part of my effervescence, no doubt, is due to the long string of unhappiness in which I’ve enshrouded myself. The Girl on the Train, Cujo, The […]

Shed your tears, for there is no succor here.

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

August 16, 2016 by ingres77 6 Comments

Spoilers abound. I’ve never before hated such a good book. There was nothing enjoyable in here. It was gross, and full of despair, and unsettling. Reading this was like bathing in a fetid pool of sewage left out in an Arizona summer. I’d rather eat rancid fish than live in this world any longer. I’d sooner spend the rest of my life watching Michael Bay movies than read this book again. Which isn’t to say it’s a bad book. It’s not. It was well written, […]
