Books don’t usually make me cry; this book was clearly an exception.

The Haunting of Brynn Wilder by Wendy Webb

December 7, 2020 by Mobius_Walker 4 Comments

Brynn Wilder has had a terrible, terrible year. She has recently had to handle the end of a decades long romantic relationship, the loss of a close family member, and the dissolution of her passion for her job. In an attempt to reset and recharge, she escapes to the tiny town of Wharton on the shores of Lake Superior where she is staying in a local inn for the summer. Though Brynn is trying to escape from what has caused her so much grief and […]

A Ghost in a Green Gown

The Girl in The Green Silk Gown by Seanan McGuire

July 31, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader 2 Comments

Bingo review 12: Green In some ways, The Girl in the Green Silk Gown was actually my introduction to Seanan McGuire; it was the first book of hers that drew my interest, but it wasn’t the first thing of hers that I read. I’m just only now getting to it. It turns out the titular green dress actually has some meaning in the story, but it’s also a handy reason to use it for this bingo square. This is book two about Rose Marshall, who […]

Nothing Remains Hidden Forever

The Broken Girls by Simone St. James

June 26, 2020 by Jen K 1 Comment

I read Simone St. James’s first novel The Haunting of Maddy Clare years ago – it was one of those books I mostly enjoyed, and thought had some flaws. Basically, good enough to check out the author again at some point, especially given that this was a first novel, but not so good that I was going to go out of my way to get another of her novels. She has written quite a few more novels since that original one, and I was curious […]

What more could you want in a classic ghost story?

The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde

January 29, 2020 by LeslieG Leave a Comment

This is a classic for a reason. A quick, *very* funny read that showcases the author’s SCATHING wit with a combination of takedown and praise of the American sentiment and approach to life. What makes this truly a remarkable story, however, is the sweetness of the heroine, the whiff of pathos, and the possibility of redemption. So many layers, so worth reading!

A ghost story, almost-horror-novel-but-not, for people who don’t really like ghost stories or horror. And people who do!

The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James

January 17, 2020 by narfna 7 Comments

I don’t normally do ghost stories, but I recently joined Book of the Month, and this was the only one of January’s books that seemed like something I might really like, so I ordered it. Plus it was also being touted as a mystery and a thriller, it fit well with my January theme of reading books by and about badass ladies (double check on that here) and with my run of books about shitty men doing bad things to women and girls. Also it’s […]

The Uninvited: Ghosts Like Us

The Uninvited by Dorothy Macardle

September 22, 2019 by xoxoxoe 1 Comment

I love old black and white movies, especially mysteries and horror movies. I was watching one of my all-time favorites, The Uninvited, a ghost story starring Ray Milland recently (it’s a really superior film – I highly recommend it if you’ve never seen it) and I started to wonder where the idea for the movie had come from. Was it an original screenplay? A short story? A novel? A quick internet search revealed that the film, directed by English director Lewis Allen was based on […]
