George Bernard Shaw (1); Mary Shelley (2)

Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

February 11, 2023 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

I’m teaching Pygmalion alongside Frankenstein….I will let the kids review them for you. Personally I love it.   Pygmalion “I didn’t like the play that much as I found it not the easiest plot to follow and the ending was unsatisfying. I think the play did well in raising a question about language and it’s role/purpose. Something that didn’t is the ending as it is deeply inconclusive and unsatisfying.” “I think the play is interesting because there are multiple different characters from different backgrounds. there […]

Saint Joan

Saint Joan by George Bernard Shaw

August 8, 2022 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Saint Joan – 4/5 I don’t know what I actually know about Joan of Arc, and almost all my references points are either the not very good Luc Besson movie “The Messenger” with Mila Jovavich which was interesting in a lot of ways but a failure in many others, from a Simpsons episode, and of course, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. I get the impression that there was a kind of cult of Joan throughout the 19th century (where both George Bernard Shaw and Mark […]

Oedipus – No Rating This is about the fiftieth time I’ve read this play, and I always enjoy it. It’s one of those plays I read when I was moving from being a reader to being a thinker about reading. I even wrote an essay about it in tenth grade. I have no clue what I wrote, but I started it at 10 pm the night before it was due. I had already gone to bed and then I suddenly remembered it. I think I […]

A pleasant surprise

May 28, 2016 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

I know I’ve seen My Fair Lady at least once before, but it was ages ago and probably when I was still in high school. My response to it was middling. The costumes and musical numbers left an impression, the story itself didn’t. I probably would never have picked up Pygmalion if it hadn’t been something easy to get my hands on and worked for a book challenge I’ve been doing with a friend this year. For plays, I prefer reading along with dramatized audio […]

I read them in the late 1980s/early 90s too. They were my first romances.

I really enjoyed this one. I was particularly amused at Lady Catherine deBoutgh’s disgust at her assassin’s incompetence.
