Teen Suicide without a gimmick

I Was Here by Gayle Foreman

May 7, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I quite enjoyed Foreman’s novel If I Stay and its follow up Where She Went, and while she isn’t an author I would have remembered to deliberately look for, when I saw she had another novel, I decided it was worth a shot. I Was Here is told from the perspective of Cody, whose best friend Meg, went off to college and committed suicide at the beginning of her spring semester. For the most part, Foreman does a good job of creating a complex character in […]

I Was Here, But I Wish I Was Somewhere Else

I Was Here by Gayle Forman

January 29, 2015 by ModernLove Leave a Comment

I have devoured 5 of Gayle Forman’s previous books. I distinctly remember when Just One Nightcame out that I camped out in bed, reading it all in one night because it was that good. For me, it’s impossible not to compare I Was Here to the rest of her three-word-title books. I wonder if I hadn’t read those, hadn’t been so familiar […]

Holiday Love Stories to Make Feel You Warm and Fuzzy

My True Love Gave To Me by Edited by Stephanie Perkins

December 3, 2014 by ModernLove Leave a Comment

I love Stephanie Perkins. Seriously, in my eyes she can do no wrong. In fact (spoiler alert), one of you may be getting a book by her for Christmas this year. Ahem. When I first read that she was editing a collection of romantic holiday-themed short stories, I was thrilled. And then I read the author list and pretty much camped out at the bookstore waiting for it to show up. And you know what? I wasn’t disappointed. These twelve stories all center around relationships […]

June 3, 2014 by ModernLove Leave a Comment

Flat-Out Celeste – Jessica Park Flat-Out Celeste is the story of a girl who’s not quite like everyone else. Sometimes she starts to Google “Asperger’s” but can’t quite pull the trigger. At 17, Celeste is looking forward to leaving behind the awkward interactions of high school for the intellectual freedom of an Ivy League education.  And then she meets Justin. Justin is a student-ambassador for a California liberal arts school, 3000 miles away from Celeste’s world. He doesn’t save her, but he helps her embrace […]
