Why do all the characters names start with j?

Orbiting Jupiter by Gary D. Schmidt

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” And that’s when I started crying. Crying like a kindergarten kid in front of everyone. Crying because Joseph wasn’t just my friend. I had his back. And he had mine. That’s what greater love is.” I picked this book up from the library, not realizing or remembering that I had read it before. When I realized I had, I decided to read it anyway because I needed something […]

Snow on a cover makes me emotionally nervous

Orbiting Jupiter by Gary D. Schmidt

February 4, 2022 by Claudia 1 Comment

Orbiting Jupiter This was a short novel, bordering on novella. I don’t know where it was recommended to me but I know that any book with a cover in winter is almost certainly going to be sad so I was at least somewhat prepared. The book is from the perspective of a young boy, Jack, whose family brings in a foster kid, Joseph. Joseph is 14 and was placed in foster care after a violent and drug induced incident with a teacher. Joseph also has […]

Growing up in Vermont you know Maple Syrup from a young age. If your school did not take you on at least one trip to a family who ran sap lines, collected and boiled the sap, you probably where not in Vermont. Maple Sugar Candy is a favorite of mine. As a kid I would eat it until I was sick. Many people love that rich sticky syrup (pancakes and French toast are recommended but snow is good too. Helps makes a molasses like candy). […]

Isabella (Belle) Baumfree’s story

October 29, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Even though I am usually not a fan of “popular books” or “popular themed” books, I do wonder what I am missing. And So Tall Within: Sojourner Truth’s Long Walk Toward Freedom is one of those popular themed books I am wondering what I missed as it is not a book I am excited over. Gary D. Schmidt’s story is interesting, but at times a smidgen choppy. I had to go back a couple times to see if I missed a page or if they […]
