“Lads” have never seemed so unpleasant.

3.5 stars I read Among the Thugs for a Sociology of Sports class that I’m taking right now, but I see no reason not to review it here. This is an intense book. Buford spent a few years in the late 1980s insinuating himself into a group of “football hooligans” – what we would call soccer fans in the US. Football fandom is absolutely a lifestyle for these men, and violence is a given. Buford wanted to understand why they did what they did: rioting […]

Here be dragons

Once again I want to thank the lovely Mrs. Julien, whose generous gift of an Amazon voucher made it possible for me to buy this book. NFL player Ethan “Dex” Dexter is known to his friends and team mates as “the Wise One”. He’s quiet, observant, focused on his career and not really concerned with dating, or really all that bothered about the fact that he’s still a virgin at 24. I received a free copy of this book from the Goodreads First Reads Program, but that has not affected the content of my review. I wanted to like this more than I did. I’ve read several of Nick Hornby’s novels, and as I generally enjoy reading about sports and I enjoy memoirs and humor, I figured this book would be a gimme for me. But sadly, it wasn’t. To say that Nick Hornby was obsessed with football/soccer is an extremely large understatement. And like all […]

He was so much more…

Where Men Win Glory takes it’s title from a translation of the Iliad – “Who among mortal men are you, good friend? Since / never before have I seen you in the fighting where / men win glory, yet now you have come striding far / out in front of all others in your great heart…” I don’t think that the parallel to Achilles is particularly apt. Achilles desired to win glory for himself whereas Pat Tillman never seemed to care for glory. Nevertheless, it […]
