Losers Win Mostly by Accident

August 9, 2016 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

My review of this book on Goodreads was short: “Come up with crazy plan to steal from/ kill dragon, screw up everything but still win. Repeat. And cuss a lot. An entertaining book, but not great.” I stand by this. The gang of losers contains Will the down-on his luck farmer, Firkin the village drunk, Quirk the naive academic, and the mercenary duo of Lette she-bandit who wants a more peaceful life and Balur the lizard man. The fun thing about the group dynamic is […]

Another awesome library trip

August 9, 2016 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’ve known about this book for a while and I finally got around to getting Ink and Bone from my own local library. I’m glad it was on the top of the pile. So in this world, the ancient library of Alexandria was never lost or destroyed. Instead it becomes the entity which rules the world as it controls all knowledge. To this end, personal ownership of books is forbidden. People are allowed access to certain titles via notebooks that function like modern tablets called […]

You are entering the Red Zone. Proceed at own risk. When in doubt, run.

I consider myself very lucky that I discovered Justin Cronin’s “The Passage” series only last summer, so the wait for City of Mirrors was much less painful and dramatic than it would have been if I’d been reading in real time: The Passage was published in 2010 and The Twelve in 2012. City of Mirrors came out four weeks ago. That’s not on a George R. R. Martin level, but still could have been a brutal wait for me. Whew! I love this series. I […]

You can check out any time you like but you can never leave (Cannonball!)

4.5 Stars. I’d seen some glowing reviews of this book on Cannonball Read, so when it popped up on my library list as available, I immediately downloaded it. I went in not knowing much about the book, but was pleasantly surprised to be reading a great addition to the great canon of vampire literature. This is the first truly modern vampire book I’ve ever read. True Blood and The Vampire Diaries got halfway there, but The Coldest Girl in Coldtown takes it to the next […]

All men must die

3.5 Stars. For at least the last couple of years, I kept hearing about this book called Sabriel. It popped up on lists of what to read to fill the Harry Potter shaped hole in your heart, bookish podcasts, Cannonball Read, and in conversations with various friends and family. This cult favorite was clearly something I needed to pick up and I’m glad I did. Sabriel is born into a family of magical necromancers living in the Old Kingdom, but gets shipped off to boarding […]

4,100 pages of perpetual youth.

July 16, 2016 by ingres77 16 Comments

I read these books last month, but wanted to save them to celebrate my Cannonball. When I was a teenager, I thought I read a lot. But I don’t think I ever read 40 books in a year before. Last year, reading mostly historical biographies, I only made it to 29 (my goal was 12, though). So I didn’t expect to really be able to make it this year. So I’m pleasantly surprised that I was able to make it in approximately six months. So, […]
