Sometimes you read a book and you’re like, the hell did I just read? And then other times you’re like THE HELL DID I JUST READ. This is the second one. This is the last novel I had to read before I could vote in this year’s Hugos. I probably wouldn’t have read it for a couple of years otherwise because the older I get and the more fantasy books I’ve got crammed all up in my head, the harder it is for me to […]
I tried real hard for this not to be my Double Cannonball, but here we are. This is the universe we all have to live in.
The Dragon Reborn is by far the best one of these books yet. Jordan is clearly getting his feet under him writing-wise (although I know this will start changing for the worse around book five or six, depending on who you talk to), and a lot of the things that annoyed me in the first and second books are either gone or much softened here. I’m long past thinking this is a LOTR clone. He does make one puzzling choice that I feel sort of […]
Susan is a problem.
My initial review of this book cracks me up (see below). Yeah, sure, Ashley. Final verdict. Not your cup. Woosh woosh woosh (that was the sound of time passing) oh wait, you love this series now, you bobo. Since I finally fell in love with this series around book ten or so (it was just “like” from book four on), I’ve theorized that if I were ever to revisit the first three books I would feel differently about them, and that turned out to be […]
Snow White Is Badass and I Love It
The fairy tale is such an underrated genre for adults. I think sometimes when we talk about fairy tales we forget just how twisted the genre was at the beginning, and that many of the original stories weren’t intended for children. This one isn’t quite so grotesque, and while there isn’t anything that would automatically rule it out as a book for children (sex, violence, the usual), it’s clear that Gaiman wrote this with an adult audience in mind. It all starts with Snow White, […]
Sports and baddies
Well, here it is. My eagerly anticipated (by absolutely no one) review for Oddly Normal: Book 3! Chapter 11: There are sports! And peer pressure! We get to see a wide variety of Fignation’s residents in the spectator section. And I noticed that Oopie looks quite regal when it is not talking. Chapter 12: And now, a pod race! On brooms! In orange! I do appreciate how much emotion is conveyed through the cat in this and the next chapter. It is a counterpart […]
For me, this book was just okay, which isn’t okay!!!
I don’t know, guys, this book just wasn’t for me. I don’t understand why the universe is doing this to me! It’s getting such good reviews, like glowing reviews, and really the sum total of my feelings can be described with a single syllable. (It’s “meh,” if you’re curious.) And it had such promise! Who doesn’t want to read about a mysterious fungus that makes people develop pretty black designs on their bodies that look like dragon scales, and then burst into flames? And a […]
