My spellcheck changed “orc” to “orca” and now I want to read that book.

A Vow to Heal (Vows of Unity #1) by Lionel Hart

April 16, 2026 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

Korik does not fit in. With the recent alliance between elves and orcs, he is the only healer in his town. Shy and withdrawn, he focuses on doing a good job and helping the town’s residents. He is tall and gangly, and is more fit to work one-on-one as a healer than as a soldier or tradesman. After successfully delivering the elf prince’s child, Korik gains the trust of the local nobility. They ask him to accompany two elves south, captain Varen and his pregnant […]

Prince of Fools: The Red Queen's War #1 by Mark Lawrence

December 18, 2024 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

Cowards divide into two broad groups. Those paralysed by their fear, and those galvanized by it. ― Mark Lawrence, Prince of Fools I’ve always felt that the placement of a man’s testicles is an eloquent argument against intelligent design. ― Mark Lawrence, Prince of Fools Prince Jalan is the third son of the third son of the queen of Red March. Despite being a long way off from the path of succession, he’s successfully used his title of prince to maximum effectiveness. He’s a gambler, […]

They say you can’t go home again.

My favorite place in the world when I was a kid was the basement children’s room of the town library. I even ended up working there in high school. I systematically read my way around the YA books on the perimeter of the room, going back to certain ones over and over. One of the series I revisited a few times was the Tillerman Cycle, a seven-novel series which starts with Homecoming (1981). There are many children’s books and YA novels that have not aged […]

This book left me at a loss for words.

What an absolutely odd book. This was assigned for my lit class which, as I’ve mentioned before, I was mostly taking as an elective to force me to read things I wouldn’t normally. And well, let’s just say that I would never in my entire life have read this normally. It’s a classic, so it feels odd to summarize, but I can’t be the only one late to the game – an ethereal unicorn goes looking for other unicorns, winds up captured, picks up a […]
