A spoiled Southern belle gets supernatural powers, goes on a roadtrip with a hard-drinking Cajun. Hijinks ensue

February 3, 2014 by Malin 8 Comments

2.5 stars Sixteen year old Evangeline “Evie” Greene tells her story of woe and confusion to a creepy madman bent on chaining her in his basement dungeon. Before the apocalyptic Flash that destroyed the world as we know it, Evie was a rich and popular Southern Belle, with a dark secret. All summer, while her friends were off travelling the world, she was in an asylum, trying to suppress the horrific hallucinations and visions she suffered. Then the Flash hit and it turns out that […]

The story of a very special little girl and her journey of self discovery

February 2, 2014 by Malin 2 Comments

I’m actually going to use the Goodreads summary of this, because it’s what made me want to read the book in the first place: Melanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her “our little genius”. Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don’t like her. She jokes that she won’t bite, but they don’t laugh.  Melanie […]

The Circle, by David Eggers

January 26, 2014 by Vylotte Leave a Comment

When Mae arrives on her first day of work at The Circle, the world’s largest internet company, she is immediately engulfed and welcomed on campus, dazzled by the constant events and built-in social life. As the reader and a geek, I too was dazzled. All the perks of working for the mega-rich people-friendly companies were trotted out: the concerts and groups, encouraged individuality, free lunches and malleable schedules, all wrapped in a shiny high-tech bow. The gloss quickly loses it’s glamour when the social opportunities […]

“Perfection exacts a price, but it’s the imperfect who pay it”

January 8, 2014 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

Goodreads summary: “A man-made plague has swept the earth, but a small group survives, along with the green-eyed Crakers – a gentle species bio-engineered to replace humans. Toby, onetime member of the Gods Gardeners and expert in mushrooms and bees, is still in love with street-smart Zeb, who has an interesting past. The Crakers’ reluctant prophet, Snowman-the-Jimmy, is hallucinating; Amanda is in shock from a Painballer attack; and Ivory Bill yearns for the provocative Swift Fox, who is flirting with Zeb. Meanwhile, giant Pigoons and […]

In the After

January 8, 2014 by Vylotte Leave a Comment

In the aftermath of an alien invasion, one girl and the child she rescues must live an entirely silent life to avoid detection. At least until they are discovered by a scientific enclave that changes everything. It was entertaining, I liked the investigation into the beginnings of dystopia, and there were some bits that were unique. Could quite easily be the far prequel to “Brave New World.” It falls into some of the same YA tropes as “Divergent” and its ilk, with the young adult […]

This sounds amazing. I saw some discussion today about contemporary monster romance being the descendant of fairy tales.
