What even is this nonsense I just wrote.

September 29, 2016 by narfna 6 Comments

Okay, so, context: 1. Superman is my favorite superhero. I have been smitten since watching the old Fleischer Technicolor Superman cartoons my dad bought me on VHS when I was five years old, but the big oaf became a life-long love in 1994 when Lois & Clark premiered on TV. Each iteration I’ve seen since has only made me love the character more (excepting Man of Steel and its sequel, which do not represent anything that I love about the character, which in fact actively takes […]

And so I disliked a book written by Gene Luen Yang.

July 6, 2016 by narfna 7 Comments

I’ve read all of Gene Luen Yang’s comics, so it was a no-brainer that I would be reading his version of Superman. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy it. Actually, I’ve never really enjoyed a Superman comic, so this may be on me. But before we get to the actual comic, a complaint. WTF, why is the DC comics universe so messed up??? I mean, it took me an hour after reading this to determine which version of Superman I was reading, where it was in the […]

The Seinfeld of Hipster Heroes

June 11, 2016 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Nothing substantial happens in volume two of the Batgirl reboot, and I didn’t mind at all. Barbara Gordon and her gang of friends are fun to hang out with, regardless of whether this particular collection has a overarching story thread or meaningful character development. As an economical comics fan, I generally prefer to buy books of short runs and defined arcs. But, Batgirl’s characters and art are too fun to ignore. This collection carries along the best aspects of volume one (https://cannonballread.com/2015/10/when-superheroes-use-tinder-for-good/) while toning down […]

Say Goodbye to the Hot Pants

February 16, 2015 by Quorren 5 Comments

I know it’s blasphemous, as a comic book nerd, to ever admit that you like a character’s costume redesign.  But I wholeheartedly endorse Wonder Woman’s new look in Odyssey.  Gone are the unflattering, high-waisted hot pants, the heeled boots, that super-in-your-face-patriotism that makes you think she just might fart out eagles.  (Which I never really understood…  She’s an Amazon.  So, if we have to put a nationality to her, wouldn’t it be Greek?  I don’t know.  I probably just caused at least two people to […]

I am the Walrus.

You have no frame of reference here, Robyn.  You’re like a child who wanders into the middle of a movie and wants to know. . .

I felt the same way. Interesting concept, but the execution was lacking.

on Sometimes, a book cover promises cats and lies. This book, on the other hand, delivers in spades. SO many cats, guys.
