The Cloisters (2022) by Katy Hays

I am posting a picture from Christchurch Priory, Dorset, a medieval structure which actually would be a good place for a murder mystery. I’m not going to post a picture of the book cover, because the cover is beautiful and it will suck you in to buying it and you will end up throwing it across the room and denting it anyway. At least if you’re an academic. The setting is the Cloisters section of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the narrator/protagonist is Ann, a […]

More Nick and Charlie, just in time for Christmas

Heartstopper volume 5 by Alice Oseman

by Leave a Comment

Nick and Charlie are closer than ever, but despite what their friends think, they still haven’t done THAT. Lately, it’s probably all either can think about, but it’s a big step and neither wants to pressure the other. Nick is also a year older than Charlie, and is having to consider which Universities he’s going to apply to next year. His first inclination is living at home and going to his local Uni, so he’ll be close to Charlie, but he goes on a road […]

More books I read this summer and am only reviewing now to make it to 104

Cassiel's Servant by Jacqueline Carey

Codename Charming by Lucy Parker

With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo

Sleep No More by Seanan McGuire

Cassiel’s Servant – Jacqueline Carey Rating: 3.5 stars Kushiel’s Dart is one of my favourite fantasy books, and books in general, of all time. It stands up, I re-read it this summer in preparation for the release of this. Has Jacqueline Carey done exactly the same thing as Stephenie Meyer and E.L James did, and retold her already existing novel from the POV of another central character? Yes, she has. Was I pretty sure that this was going to be a lot more worthwhile and […]

Double Cannonballing with an unexpected book.

The Sweet Spot by Amy Poeppel

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 3 Book 1/30 I was genuinely surprised by how much I liked this. I very rarely really connect to contemporary fiction anymore that doesn’t have some sort of genre twist or queer angle. But this was just so charming! I would advise not reading the blurb, because it spoils something that doesn’t happen until over 60% of the way through the book. The Sweet Spot follows several women in Manhattan whose lives are either falling apart or finally coming together. […]

#CBR15 Passport Challenge: Books from different countries (set in and written by a Swedish author, read in Swedish) CBR15 Bingo: Europe (see description for Passport Challenge) Official book description (translated by me): Folk med ångest (literally translated as People with anxiety, official English title Anxious People) is an unusually messy comedy about a hostage drama during an apartment showing, where a failed bank robber locks themselves in with an overly enthusiastic realtor, two bitter IKEA-addicts, a mean multimillionaire, a sad lady, a very pregnant woman, […]

CBR15 Bingo: Edibles

Arsenic and Adobo by Mia P. Manansala

CBR15 Bingo: Edibles (this book features both a lot of food and quite a few drugs) Lila Macapagal used to live in Chicago and dreamed of opening her own restaurant, but both her business and relationship failed miserably. She’s back in her hometown, helping to run her tita (aunt) Rosie run the family restaurant, where they serve Philipino food. Unfortunately, Lila’s ex-boyfriend is a food critic and seems determined to come back, again and again, to sample the food and write scathing things about the […]
