Finally this series is heating up again

Lumberjanes, vols, 17-19 by Shannon Watters, Kat Leyh

July 31, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 6: Hot So the three most recent volumes of Lumberjanes (17-19) could really have fit into several categories, but I’m going to go with “Hot” because a chunk of one adventure takes place in the dinosaur age when the climate is pretty tropical, and during another adventure things get a little heated between Diana (goddess) and another goddess from a rival mythology, Freya. I have to say, I’d gotten behind with this series because it wasn’t as entertaining for a while, but thankfully, the […]

Batman: White Knight, Deluxe Edition by Sean Murphy

January 28, 2022 by Jake Leave a Comment

I so rarely write full-length reviews on graphic novels. This is a rare exception cuz…well, I got a lot to say. I’m not a fan of most modern day DC/Marvel graphic novels. They all have familiar story lines, twee dialogue, and conclusive narratives. I’ll grant that I don’t go too deep in the weeds with them but when I do venture out of my Batman/Daredevil comfort zone (like Hawkeye for example), I’m almost always disappointed. While I do enjoy a decent diet of Batman tales, modern ones […]

4, 4 for 4

Hawkeye, Vol. 1: My Life As A Weapon by Matt Fraction

Death Comes As The End by Agatha Christie

Country Dark by Chris Offutt

Heaven's A Lie by Wallace Stroby

December 8, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

Over the weekend and into the early part of this week, I read four books. Each one merited four stars and all were good in their own unique way…   Hawkeye, Vol 1: My Life as a Weapon It’s good. I guess. No really, it’s good. All good. It’s fine. Just…it’s kind of why I don’t read a lot of comics: simplistic hero narratives with twee dialogue. I know this is what everyone wants thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I’m not sure it’s what […]

I did end up reading through Vol. 4, and it’s better but I still feel kind of weird about it.

Chew, Vol. 2: International Flavor by John Layman

July 12, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

**30 Books in 30 Days** Book 26/30 Ugh, why you gotta ruin a good thing, John and Rob?* Ugh. I don’t know what to think about this series now. I sort of have whiplash. Since I have Vols. 3-5 checked out from the library right now I’ll probably keep going, but with a warier eye now. Ugh. *The writer and artist, respectively. Who, for context, are both white. So basically there are two things ruining my enjoyment here, and I almost two-starred this, but I […]

“The world is a book. Some words stand out from the page.”

Lucifer, Vol. 1: Devil in the Gateway by Mike Carey

July 9, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

**30 Books in 30 Days** Book 22/30 I liked this, but I’m having trouble remembering what happened in it, and I only read it two or three days ago. I also haven’t quite yet caught what this story is *about*. Lucifer was one of my favorite parts of Sandman. What he did in that series was so audacious, it delighted me. I wanted to see how Mike Carey (and Peter Gross) would follow that up. This volume hasn’t really answered that for me yet, and […]

Who Belongs Here?

Sun and Sand by Jamila Rowser, Neil Brideau

July 7, 2021 by KM Bezner Leave a Comment

Sun and Sand is a fantastic new anthology zine from Radiator Comics and Black Josei Press. It collects ten mini comics from cartoonists living in south Florida, and explores the physical, emotional, cultural, and natural connections to the area. The artists guide readers through beaches, swamps, and the human communities woven into them.  Many of the comics in Sun and Sand explore this theme with a sense of humor: assertive cockroaches, an alligator presenting an HOA violation, animals feasting on a dropped mango while the […]
