Girl Gone Mildly Wild

January 3, 2017 by Melina 2 Comments

I’ve been able to avoid Wild for quite some time now, but after the Gilmore Girls revival, one of my book club friends decided that we should read it.    My own personal experiences and Cheryl’s cloud my judgement on whether or not it was a good book.  Strayed lost her mother to cancer in her mid twenties, I lost my dad to a motorcycle accident when I was 23.  Both of us lost our center and while I had a support system (who was […]

Forget about the title and the sort of weird ending. Everything else works pretty much perfectly.

I’ve learned a lot about my reading habits since I started cannonballing. For instance, I know that I like Stephen King and Rainbow Rowell above all other writers, and that a sub-par book from them is still going to get at least 4 stars from me. I know that I’m still on the fence with fantasy — but thanks to suggestions from other reviewers like narfna and Malin, I’m making some headway there. I’ve also learned (mostly through trial and error) that I like a […]

“Fighting Food to Find Transcendence”

January 3, 2017 by Bea Pants 6 Comments

I read this book on the recommendation of the podcast Stuff You Missed in History Class in their episode that discussed this case. I highly recommend both the podcast and the book. The case of Linda Burfield Hazzard is a fascinating one. It’s also interesting to see that the lengths many people will go in order to cure their real or imagined maladies hasn’t changed much. What has changed is how we deal with the practitioners of these so-called natural cures. Sisters Claire and […]

Reincarnation meets Groundhog Day….

January 3, 2017 by kella 3 Comments

Not my ideal choice for a first pick, but it was a book club selection that I was supposed to have read back in Nov/Dec, and I’m nothing if not an extraordinary procrastinator.  I persevered through this with the gusto of someone who is determined to stick with a New Years Resolution.  If I picked this up in October, I couldn’t guarantee the same enthusiasm. Life After Life was one of those books that I finished and said, “I think I liked it? Maybe? I […]

Tentacles, and wings, and Eldritch Horror! Oh my!

January 2, 2017 by trib 1 Comment

Oh, my! I wish I were skilled enough to review this in Seussian meter. It really does get everything so right. I bought this as a bit of fun, as I’m a long-time Lovecraft fan, and enjoyed Dr Seuss’ books as a child, and then again reading them to my (now 19-year-old) daughter when she was little. I’ve also played more than my fair share of Chaosium’s Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game in my time. Ivankovic manages to richly capture the look and feel of […]

Nothing like a cozy murder to get you through the holidays

January 2, 2017 by Ellepkay 3 Comments

While romance is my genre of choice, when I stray it is always to mysteries.  Lately my mystery reading has taken me to the historical and paranormal sub-genres, but my first love was of the cozy variety.  I read many of Agatha Christie’s books back in high school but hadn’t read any in 20+ years.  I remember liking almost everything she wrote, but the Miss Marple mysteries were my favorite.  Something about a woman who is underestimated and overlooked but outwits everyone is very appealing […]
