Our September book club is coming up quickly, we’re just two weeks away. Our non-western literary fiction choice In Praise of Hatred by Khaled Khalifa has lots for the reader to absorb and think about. Our group chat about this book will get going around 2 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday September 13th, both here and in our Facebook group, the Book Chat. Book Club is open to anyone and everyone. A shapeshifter tale of violence & confusion over the ages
Unfortunately, life happened, so it’s been a while since my last review. It took me an extra month to finish the last 60 pages of The Devourers! I did participate in our Cannonball Read book club discussion on time. Better late to review than never, I say. 😉 The Devourers was on several 2016 year end lists. I hadn’t read much contemporary fantasy, so was very intrigued to read it. I also love stories about shape-shifters (and most supernatural creatures). While reading the Kate Daniels’ series by Ilona Andrews, […]
Intellectually interesting, not so much enjoyable for me.
Well, I think I’ve put this review off long enough, and it will be a short one, since our fantastic discussion last month covered a LOT of ground. The Devourers is certainly an original take on werewolves, I’ll give it that, but this book was just not for me. I get intellectually what it was going for, and in parts I was engaged, but overall, I just didn’t care. At the beginning of the book, I actively disliked it. As many have said in their […]
“Fool that I am,” said he, “that I did not tear out my heart the day I resolved to revenge myself.”
Hi, remember when our book club discussion for this book was December 1st but I didn’t finish the book until January 23rd? And also how I’ve been reading it since November 13th? Because I do. I definitely remember all of that. Ultimately, I’m really glad I did the audio version of this book. I don’t think I could have finished it otherwise. I previously got about 1/3 of the way through this book when I tried reading it in high school, but it defeated me then. The beginning 20% or […]
Cannon Book Club Announcement – Classics with Adaptations
(Note: Book Club is Today! Join us on the discussion post or in the CBR Facebook group. Also see #CannonBookClub discussion topics – MsWas) Are you ready to read a classic? We have chosen The Count of Monte Cristo as our next book club on December 1st. I look forward to reading and chatting with all of you about this book, its not something I’ve read yet. The two runners up, in case you were wondering, were The Age of Innocence and Jane Eyre, so I’m hoping […]
This is how you do young adult fiction.
Dammit, I knew I should have written this review when I first finished the book, but I decided to push it off because it seemed too hard to try and sum up all my feeeeelings, but joke’s on me, now it’s even harder! Sherman Alexie has been one of my favorite writers since I was in college and one of my English comp teachers made us watch Smoke Signals, which is based off Alexie’s short story, “This is What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona,” and […]
