A brother and sister made of wood

The Little Wooden Robot and the Log Princess by Tom Gauld

October 13, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

At first, I thought The Little Wooden Robot and the Log Princess would be a “girl power” story. The fact the featured inventor of the story was female, hinted at that. And of course, the witch is also female. But later, I felt this book was a bit chauvinist with the Log Princess just forgiving her Wooden Robot brother very easily for the (understandable) mistake he has made. Yes, we make mistakes, and forgiveness is good, but it was the tone that was of putting. […]

Born to Ride: A Story About Bicycle Face by Larissa Theule

December 28, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

On the surface, Born to Ride: A Story About Bicycle Face is a book about a girl being taught to ride a bicycle by her brother. Looking deeper, Larissa Theule made a piece of history that shows a slice of what women did to gain many rights we take for granted today. The illustrations perfectly complement Theule’s text with the bold use of color and details (which there are a lot), showing multiple events all at once. This dual story by illustrations allow us to […]

Summarizing the entire series after reading the last five books in it

Amulet V04 The Last Council by Kazu Kibuishi

Amulet V05 Prince of the Elves by Kazu Kibuishi

Amulet V06 Escape from Lucien by Kazu Kibuishi

Amulet V07 Firelight by Kazu Kibuishi

Amulet V08 Supernova by Kazu Kibuishi

September 30, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Ages ago I read book one and two of the Amulet series. Kazu Kibuishi’s illustrations are fun, the storylines familiar and it seemed like a good series to get involved with. After all, only 8 (now 6) books and they were short so what could go wrong? Well, it wasn’t “gone wrong” but it is an odd thing and one I’m a bit embarrassed to admit. Either I missed book three or I have absolutely no memory of it. And that has colored the rest […]

If you want to read a book that makes you sorry you read it, but in a good way, this is for you.

Riot Baby by Tochi Onyebuchi

June 8, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Riot Baby is one of those books that you really cannot talk about. And yet, of course, you must. But if you do, you tell the whole story. It is raw. It is gritty. It is gut wrenching. But if you do not, people will miss out on something…… maybe special; maybe horrible; maybe great; maybe…. I will leave it up to you to decide. As you follow Ella and Kev through South Central, Harlem, Rikers Island and back to Watts, Tochi Onyebuchi will make […]

The Red Pyramid book one of The Kane Chronicles by Orpheus Collar

May 28, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Rick Riordan is a popular author. I have not had the pleasure of reading his novels, but I have meet him once and have read two of his books adapted for the graphic novel format. The Red Pyramid book one of The Kane Chronicles was adapted by Orpheus Collar. And while it is a good story (we are following Egyptian mythology this time), it is also a slow story in places. It took me several days to finish it, as I was only able to […]

We need some space….and humans to do our dirty work.

Last Pick V01 Last Pick by Jason Walz

Last Pick: V02 Born to Run by Jason Walz

May 11, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

You know this story. We have read it a hundred times: Aliens take over Earth, steal people for their own needs and eventually, humans decide to fight back. A few will die on both sides, but even more become heroes.  And there is nothing wrong with that. Especially since Last Pick and Last Pick: Born to Run by Jason Walz have a few new pieces of information. This is a science fiction and realism mixed together creation. There is the classic graphic novel format and […]
