Join Thomas on his adventure in a book . . . inside a book . . . inside a book

The Book in the Book in the Book  by Julien Baer

April 15, 2019 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

The Book in the Book in the Book  is a clever book. And while the idea has been done before, Julien Baer and Simon Bailly presents it in a new format. When Thomas wanders off while spending a day on the beach with his family, he finds a book about a boy named Thomas who is having a day on the winter slopes. He too, wanders off and finds a book about a boy named Thomas who is a having a day out in outer […]

Proud to be a Book Hog!

The Book Hog by Greg Pizzoli

March 27, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Book Hog has a particularly odd cover that at first made me think this was going to be a very weak book. It was going to have a particular story (slapstick for no reason).  However, I did enjoy it.  And while the artwork is still not my thing, it has a certain charm to that works well with the story. Greg Pizzoli has created a book about how one Hog is a Book Hog. He loves books. Loves the way they smell. The way […]

The Book is more Interesting than the Content

The Enemies of Books by William Blades

March 20, 2019 by CosmoNewanda 1 Comment

I picked this book up in an antique bookstore in Tokyo. I bought it mostly for the title, expecting a history of censorship, which is a topic I’ve always been interested in. What I got was more literally interpretation of enemies. Blades covers fire, water, vermin and dust as if they are free thinking enemies actively planning the destruction of books. His focus is entirely on the books as items that carry knowledge and not as special items in themselves. He says, “The value of […]

Books about books, dance, reporters and scuba diving!

December 12, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Last night, I was looking at the box of (sadly) damaged books at work. I saw four I Can Read books. I have not read one in a while, so I picked them up. They average out to be a 2.5 for the four, but kids will enjoy and will be 5’s down the board. My biggest complaint with easy readers is companies do not have a uniform rating system. Publisher X might have these at a Level 1 but another would have them as […]

Madness, Illness, Grief, and The Haunting of Hill House

November 14, 2018 by xoxoxoe 2 Comments

Beware of mild spoilers … I recently finished watching The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix. But it is still with me. It was at times an uncomfortable watch, but it also may be one of the best things I’ve seen in a long time. It can’t really be called an adaptation of the immortal Shirley Jackson novel. That classic book could be considered more of a jumping-off point for this, an original, deeply-felt horror story. The original novel, first published in 1959, concerns a […]

And Then There Were Satanists … The Legacy

October 8, 2018 by xoxoxoe Leave a Comment

The Legacy, by John Coyne, is a mixture of an Agatha Christie whodunnit, as members of a house party are knocked off one by one, and an occult thriller. It’s not always clear how much of the menace is due to dark magic or just plain old greed, as six people have been elected to inherit a legacy — of vast wealth, property, and possibly, supernatural power. Coyne wrote the novel as a tie-in to the successful film starring Katharine Ross and Sam Elliot (and […]
