From hustle and bustle to buzz and whirr

Nightsong by Sally Soweol Han

January 17, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Nightsong by Sally Soweol Han is a story about a young boy who is tired of visiting the adults with his adult (assuming mother). But soon it is time to go home and the adult and child head for the bus, hop on and are leaving the city behind. Until the wheels on the bus don’t go round and round, and one needs to be fixed. A long day got longer, but our young boy decided to listen to the sounds around him and explore […]

For the Girls who’ll be the Women

Bedtime Ballet by Kallie George

Stella Keeps the Sun Up by Clothilde Ewing

Pineapple Princess by Sabine Hahn

March 8, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When you have three picture books that are at best a “three each” you cannot say much about them beyond the usual what they are about, quick something about the illustrations, and if you liked it or not. But due to the fact March is Women’s History Month, these three are books you want to add to your Girl stories. Each one has delightful illustrations. They are cute, fun, and while familiar, there are modern touches to make them new and fresh. Bedtime Ballet by […]

Fight with all your might that un-friend, the Night

Fight the Night by Tomie dePaol

July 3, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The cbr12bingo No Money! slot is the easiest one for me. Reader copies are scattered all over my workspace! It’s a miracle I can get anything done. And one freebie was this classic Tomie dePaola picture book. Fight the Night is an early Tomie dePaola work released back in February for today’s fan. While you know it is dePaola, the art is less polish than his later work. This is because the book is created in an “old school” art format with actually very little […]

And to all a Good night…

November 8, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Construction Site on Christmas Night by Sherri Duskey Rinker is like the other books in the series of construction vehicle friends. This makes it a nice addition to your collection of construction books created by Rinker and A.G. Ford. Or if you are not familiar with the series, it is also for fans of construction vehicles. It is also centered around the theme of the Christmas spirit of giving: the construction team works hard to give a special gift at the end of the book […]

Lucky 13

November 7, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Wade Bradford has created something subtlety different with There’s a Dinosaur on the 13th Floor.  It has some interesting twists (the story comes full circle by the end). The counting aspect is surprisingly fun. I was not really aware of that until a couple floors up and then was, “DUH! It is part counting book.” The ending has its charm (that afore mentioned twist). Kevin Hawkes adds a delightful touch to the story with their illustrations. He is one of those artists that you can […]

Cuddle up Hedgie Lovers there is a new adventure in town!

October 18, 2018 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

The Snowy Nap is very classic Jan Brett. You will either LOVE IT or will be “This is okay.” There is little to no “middle ground” to the liking or disliking of the book. However, even if the story does not grab you, as for many people and many of her books, the best part of the story really are Brett’s illustrations. They are worth the price of admission! The story is sweet: our hero Hedgie does not want to take a winter nap this […]
