A girl and her bear

Bear is a Bear by Jonathan Stutzman

August 18, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

One bear, one child, lots of adventures. Bear is a Bear is Jonathan Stutzman tapping into the imagination of a child. We see our main character going about daily life and daily play with a giant bear, lovingly tagging along. They make mischief, messes, cry tears, read books, have lots of laughs and love hardily. And one day it is time to say, Goodbye. But it is not the end. Sometime in the not so far-off future, there is another Hello. The playfulness of Stutzman’s […]

Something’s Wrong!: A Bear, a Hare, and Some Underwear by Jory John

March 26, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Perhaps Something’s Wrong!: A Bear, a Hare, and Some Underwear is more of a 2.5 than a solid two, as the ending does have a slight twist one does not necessarily see coming and it was amusing. However, the ending was also flawed for me. Bear leaves home thinking they have forgotten something in Jory John’s picture book. They just cannot put their finger on it. Bear travels the forest, meeting friends, and is nervous about the thing he forgot; the thing that is “wrong” […]

Everything old is new again

Moonbear by Frank Asch

January 21, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

In June 2020 Moonbear’s very first adventure was reissued. Frank Asch’s Moonbear can be experienced in a fresh, new format, but stays with the classic story. I knew who Moonbear was but had not really read anything in the series. Or if I had, they did not “stick” with me. And even though the reader copy I had said Moonbear I thought it was going to be a new book, not a new edition. I am honestly not sure how I felt about a bear […]

These fierce Honey Badger sisters are not meant to be underestimated

Hot and Badgered (Honey Badger Chronicles #1) by Shelly Laurenston

In a Badger Way (Honey Badger Chronicles #2) by Shelly Laurenston

December 26, 2020 by teresaelectro 1 Comment

Since I enjoyed Shelly Laurenston’s Call of Crows series, I started her new trilogy focused on shifters rather than Viking warriors. We got a very small peek of the shifter world in the Crow books, so I was intrigued. The Honey Badger Chronicles follows the misadventures of three sisters who can’t seem to stay out of trouble. I fell in love with these feisty shifter women almost instantly. I thought the Crow warrior women were intense and uncouth, but these fierce sisters are fearless AF […]

Fern and Otto besties on an adventure

Fern and Otto: A Story about Two Best Friends by Stephanie Graegin

December 17, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Fern and Otto: A Story about Two Best Friends is an adorable book about friendship. But it is also about one friend who probably needs some special glasses to see the adventures right in front of him! And, of course, there are adventures aplenty for Fern and Otto. Much of which are more exciting then first look would assume. These two friends go out looking for an adventure that is more exciting than the one Fern is writing about in her book (enjoying themselves, each […]

The Bearmuda Triangle

A Libertarian Walks Into a Bear: The Utopian Plot to Liberate an American Town (And Some Bears) by Matthew Hongoltz-Hetling

November 20, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos 2 Comments

Something this dire – a town of people so opposed to paying taxes that they become a country-wide hotspot for bear attacks – should not be this funny. Matthew Hongoltz-Hetling carefully walks the line between Bill Bryson and a VICE documentarian while spinning this wild story of a Free Town and the beasts- man and animal alike, within. This collection of people, carefully and deliberately documented by Hongoltz-Hetling, shoot themselves in the foot so many times and with such ferocity that it is amazing the […]
