Not on the bandwagon for this series

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

May 30, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Throne of Glass sounded promising and it’s been on my list for a while. I finally picked it up; it starts off well, but then it seems to forget about the actual plot and focuses on the romantic possibilities of the incredibly obvious possible triangle between Celaena, Chaol, and Dorian, and the courtly scheming, mostly by two totally underdeveloped characters who might actually rather deserve each other. There is some supernatural evil looming in the background the whole time, but that too is pretty predictable […]

Spy, Assassin, Telepath, Family?

Spy X Family, vol. 1 by Tatsuya Endo

June 17, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

What happens when a spy needs to assemble a family unit for a mission, and the child he adopts and lady he marries are respectively a telepath and assassin, except none of them quite know what the rest of them are? A lot of fun is what. I saw a teaser excerpt of Spy X Family in a magazine, and I guess it worked since I bought the first volume about as soon as it was out. Twilight is a master spy, unfeeling and professional, […]

John Rain goes to Rio

October 23, 2018 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

So after the events of book two, where John almost gets killed a few times, he activates his escape plan.  John had been cultivating a false identity in Brazil for years in the eventuality that he’d need to get out of Japan and start a new life. Unfortunately, one of the women he met in Japan is actually from Brazil, and she returns home and they start seeing each other again.  She unknowingly (he thinks knowingly) leads them to John, and he’s almost killed again.  […]

John Rain might be trying to get out of the game?

September 7, 2018 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

cbr10bingo… Dream Vacation Ok so this book falls into the “Dream Vacation” category for cbr10bingo for 2 reasons: Tokyo and Osaka: John moved to Osaka to get away from the people who might want to kill him, but he travels back to Tokyo for most of the book.  I’ve never particularly wanted to go to Tokyo, but he makes it sound so interesting.  He goes to the little places that aren’t touristy, are off the beaten path, and that have great food.  The food he […]

John Rain is a new character for me… and I like him

August 22, 2018 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

Listicle… cbr10bingo So I cheated a little with this one.  I read it first, and then I found a list it was on 🙂  However, the list toooootally applies to me!  It’s called “What the over 35’s are reading”, and here it is: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/83374.2015_What_the_Over_35_s_Are_Reading I’m very much an over 35 (by 2 whole years!), so this list appeals to me.  I’m going to go back to it and see if there are other books on it I’d like! Enough about my old age, back to […]

For a legendary assassin, she spends a whole lot of time NOT killing people

May 6, 2017 by Malin 3 Comments

3.5 stars I put off reading this for the longest time, mainly because I figured I’d have to go back and read the first one, Throne of Glass, again to remember what happened, what with having read that way back in early 2013. But then the lovely Narfna tipped me off about this website, which allowed me to quickly recap all the stuff I only vaguely remembered, and I no longer had an excuse not to read it and it fit into my Monthly Keyword […]
