Modern Arthurian Knights

November 21, 2016 by melanir Leave a Comment

I am embarrassed to admit that I was halfway through the book before I recognized that this was a King Arthur retelling, on the other hand that could speak to McKillip’s ability to weave story threads around so that only the bare bones of the legend remains. On the other hand, once I recognized the bones as being King Arthur and his knights, the bones became extremely obvious. Patricia McKillip has long been one of my favorite authors, I absolutely adore her writing and she hasn’t […]

A treasure hunt adventure

January 1, 2016 by Loopyker 5 Comments

I don’t know how I hadn’t heard about this series before now. It seems exactly the kind of thing that someone would have recommended to me, or I would have picked up in the library if I had seen it growing up, but I didn’t come across it until browsing my online library in my 40s. Preachy Druids and Priestesses

October 4, 2015 by Quorren 1 Comment

I guess if you create a wildly successful new take on Arthurian legend, and your fans decide to adopt the religion you created* for the book, it makes sense to write yourself and your fans some new holy texts under the guise of science fiction.  I mean, it’s the L. Ron Hubbard thing to do, and that seems to have worked out very well. (*I believe Bradley did research druidism, but it’s not like there’s a lot of living Druid from the time of the […]

The Mists of Avalon

December 30, 2014 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

This book is a fall-back for me. I read it a very long time ago, over and over again. My paperback copy pretty much disintegrated. It had been a long time since my last reading, and I wanted something long so that I could get caught up on my reviews while I was reading. That didn’t work. I read, but didn’t review (hence my short crappy reviews on the last possible day!). Anyway, if you’re reading this (and I hope you’re not – this is […]
