Two Writers

We Are Watching by Alison Gaylin

Saint of the Narrows Street by William Boyle

February 28, 2025 by Jake Leave a Comment

I finished two books this past week and enjoyed them to varying degrees. One was by a favorite author, another by an author I’ve struggled with in the past. Let’s get to the latter first since I like going in reading order… We Are Watching**** I’ve always felt cold toward Alison Gaylin’s work. She’s a very good writer and yet, there’s an emotional distance in her books that I can’t land with. It’s the same issue I get when watching most Christopher Nolan movies: yeah […]

Twisty, revengy, and a quick read

The Collective by Alison Gaylin

November 26, 2022 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

Wow this book. I think I read it in three days, and that’s just reading at night before I went to bed. I know I stayed up until midnight a few nights because I couldn’t stop reading this. My best friend recommended it to me a while ago, and I just recently borrowed the ebook from the library. It’s a pretty satisfying premise. The main character Camille is still grieving her daughter five years after she died. A local college student was tried and acquitted […]

Horrorwood

What Remains of Me by Alison Gaylin

October 28, 2021 by Jake 1 Comment

Read as part of cbr13bingo: pandemic This is the second time I’ve tried Alison Gaylin’s work and for the life of me, I don’t know why I can’t connect with it. The first book I couldn’t even finish because I found myself not caring about the lead. This one was a chore, even if I enjoyed parts of it. Again, even with the multiple POVs, I couldn’t bring myself to muster energy for the lead. I have mixed feelings about Gillian Flynn but there’s a […]

maybe THIS is what Quibi was supposed to be?

Snow Flakes by Ruth Ware

Treasure by Oyinkan Braithwaite

Slow Burner by Laura Lippman

Buried by Jeffrey Deaver

The Gift by Alison Gaylin

Let Her Be by Lisa Unger

These little collections are great in a very specific way; the stories are quick, unique from each other, and can be accessed through both the Kindle and Audible. If I have just a few minutes to listen while doing chores, I can pop in and out without needed to re-immerse myself in something long and complicated! If I have a long line at the Post Office, I can stand and read the majority of a story while I wait. Low impact, low commitment, and decent […]

Two murders decades apart, and I’m sorry, your character did what now??

What Remains of Me by Alison Gaylin

September 1, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

Settling on 3.5 stars for this one, rounded down. The second half of the book was more engaging/enjoyable for me, as by that point I had started to feel more than irritation for the characters, and the plot unraveling was sort of cool. But it also lost me a little at the end, because one of the main twists/reveals does not make sense! The book follows Kelly Lund, who in 1980 at the age of seventeen was convicted of the murder of famous film director […]

Normandy Gold by Megan Abbott & Alison Gaylin

August 1, 2019 by Jake 1 Comment

Read as part of CBR11 Bingo: Illustrated I love 70s moves. I love conspiracies. I love Megan Abbott’s work. Mix it all together and you’re probably going to make something I’ll love. That’s definitely the case here. I collect Hard Case Crime novels as a hobby. I decided not to do this when they expanded to graphic novels but I admire the talent they got to do them. Abbott on this one and Crista Faust, another favorite, on one that I will have to check […]
