Delightful book about magic and secret societies and privilege

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

October 19, 2022 by wicherwill 8 Comments

This was recommended to me by a friend almost a year ago–we met up after years (like, 5+? 10+?) and realized we both shared a fondness for fantasy novels, which are apparently thin on the ground in Paris–and I ended up hemming and hawing due to some vaguely unsavory tumblr posts from an author I follow. This was around when Shadow and Bone premiered on Netflix, and the gist of it was that Bardugo had some problematic rep in her books, e.g. the tired use of “almond” to […]

Secret Societies and Power

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

Bingo Square: Fresh Start (Alex Stern, Book 1) I haven’t read too much by Leigh Bardugo – I wasn’t a big fan of the first novel in her Shadow and Bone trilogy – despite the interesting world building, I found the heroine boring and the forced love triangle that was almost mandatory in YA for a while included love interests with such extreme differences that it was a bit too obvious. I had heard from many people that her duology Six of Crows set in […]

Not for kids, seriously. Do not mistake this for YA

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

Official book description: Galaxy “Alex” Stern is the most unlikely member of Yale’s freshman class. Raised in the Los Angeles hinterlands by a hippie mom, Alex dropped out of school early and into a world of shady drug dealer boyfriends, dead-end jobs, and much, much worse. By age twenty, in fact, she is the sole survivor of a horrific, unsolved multiple homicide. Some might say she’s thrown her life away. But at her hospital bed, Alex is offered a second chance: to attend one of […]

“Mors irrumat omnia. Death fucks us all.”

Ninth House (Alex Stern, #1) by Leigh Bardugo

I don’t know, I kind of feel like my brain has been hit by a tornado. This book was a lot. In a good way. But still, a lot. I’m not quite sure I’ve finished processing, but I definitely enjoyed the ride. This is just going to be one of those books that will sit in my brain and sort of gel there, and then eventually I’ll read it again and everything will just click. I’ll probably up my rating to five stars; I usually […]
