Tourists and revolutionaries and crocodiles – oh my!

Tourist Season by Carl Hiaason

February 13, 2021 by LaneyFace Leave a Comment

Described as a Miami Vice-esque caper and a fun getaway, I gave Tourist Season by Carl Hiaason a try. I’ve never actually watched Miami Vice and other than the main characters wearing pastel blazers, I have limited knowledge about the eighties hit. I went in blindly and it was definitely an interesting experience. Told vibrantly through an eighties lens in Miami, Florida, the story follows former reporter and current private investigator Brian Keyes as he tries to uncover a slew of murders targeting tourists during—get […]

Teenage girls are so powerful

We Ride Upon Sticks by Quan Barry

January 27, 2021 by pineolliepple 1 Comment

In Quan Barry’s We Ride Upon Sticks, it’s 1989, and the middling Danvers High School Girls Varsity Field Hockey Team turns to witchcraft to help them make it to state finals (with the help of a possibly-haunted Emilio Estevez-covered notebook dubbed “Emilio” and the local lore of neighbouring Salem, Massachusetts). I just finished the book and I’m lying in bed awake with my heart feeling like it might burst out of my chest because – the absolutely nuclear power of teenage girls, man. Written in […]

If Tumblr had existed when this was published…

War for the Oaks by Emma Bull

March 17, 2018 by llp 2 Comments

It would have been CRAZY. It is made for fanfic and fan art and OTPing. I am a little in love with this book that I was so fortunate to receive in the book exchange from JS. The War for the Oaks is one of the first urban fantasies published in 1987; it is set in Minneapolis in the 80s, centring on a musician named Eddi who finds herself getting out of both a bad relationship and a bad band, and falling into the middle […]

Player One is Ready!

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

August 16, 2017 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

I absolutely loved this book.  I know an audiobook is good when it makes me sit in my car outside my garage (so I don’t die from asphyxiation) and continue listening after I get home.  This book is read by Wil Wheaton, who just has a great voice with fun inflections, and tone changes, and all that is good in the world. This book was 15 hours long, so there’s a lot to cover.  I really don’t want to give anything away, so I’m going […]

“It was the dawn of new era, one where most of the human race now spent all of their free time inside a videogame.”

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

Our adventure takes place in the near future (about 30 years from now).  Most people spend most of their time online (wait…) only online is way cooler.  They have the OASIS, which is kind of like a holodeck.  You put on a visor and haptic gloves and interact with your online world via your avatar.  (Kind of like the movie Avatar.)  And as the real world has gone to shit, being in the OASIS is way better than real life. The creator of the OASIS, […]
