About LaneyFace

CBR13 participant

I love a challenge for a good cause. I love reading, squirrels, my dog Jody, and long walks where I don't see many people (but do see a lot of squirrels). I would like to read more classic novels and well written sci-fi, but find myself drawn to WWII non-fiction, enemies-to-lovers romances, and rereading Harry Potter even though JK Rowling is a big Jerk (with a capital J). I'm open to suggestions, and am waiting for my next five-star read - it's been so long.

James Bond is alright, I guess.

From Russia with Love by Ian Fleming

March 29, 2021 by LaneyFace Leave a Comment

I have never been a huge fan of James Bond movies, so unsurprisingly Ian Fleming’s books never pinged my reading radar. My dear friend describes himself as a Bond scholar, so when he asked me to read From Russia with Love with him, I figured, why not? I enjoy a good espionage tale and after recently reading The Spy and the Traitor, the true story of a Russian double-agent for MI6 during the Cold War, the timing for doing so was impeccable. For a Bond […]

Alcohol is a tricky, tricky, tricky thing and this was difficult to write

Quit Like a Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed with Alcohol by Holly Whitaker

March 23, 2021 by LaneyFace 7 Comments

This is a difficult review to write because it feels so deeply personal as compared to writing about crocodile murders or an enemy-to-lovers romance. Quit Like a Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed with Alcohol details Holly Whitaker’s personal journey with alcohol leading to her sobriety and recovery. It’s equal parts memoir, self-help, and practical programming. I think it’s a book for a wide range of folks, from those who are sober curious, to those who seek a path to […]

I forgot how recently I read this book, but I liked it

The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren

March 17, 2021 by LaneyFace Leave a Comment

Here comes my favorite trope again—enemies to lovers! Christina Lauren’s The Unhoneymooners follows Olive Torres, a perennially unlucky woman whose twin sister marries the brother of Olive’s arch-nemesis, the handsome and affable Ethan. When the newlyweds are unable to attend their honeymoon due to an unfortunate bought of food poisoning at their wedding reception, Olive and Ethan are gifted the nonrefundable Hawaiian honeymoon. Reluctant to go, but forced by their respective siblings to accept the trip, Olive and Ethan squabble and verbally spar with one […]

Fantasy newbie thinks the 2nd LOTR is great

The Two Towers (The Lord of the Rings #2) by J.R.R. Tolkien

March 2, 2021 by LaneyFace Leave a Comment

I am late to the game when it comes to fantasy epics. I have read and reread Harry Potter more times than I can count, but anything more hardcore than that has historically failed to grasp my attention (looking at you, Game of Thrones). I am so very happy that I decided to embark on my own hobbit-sized journey to read Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, because it has paid off handsomely. The second part of Tolkien’s trilogy follows the Fellowship after their […]

Yeah, I’m too old for this…stuff

Only When It's Us by Chloe Liese

February 18, 2021 by LaneyFace 4 Comments

Only When It’s Us is Chloe Liese’s first romance novel in her “Bergman Brothers” saga. It follows UCLA star soccer player Willa Sutter and her frenemy relationship with Ryder Bergman. Their relationship gets off to a rocky start when Willa asks Ryder for his notes in class and he seemingly ignores her. She reacts in a hideously disproportionate way which becomes all the more irksome when it turns out Ryder is literally deaf and did not physically hear her request. The bulk of the novel […]

Fun, steamy enemy-to-lovers romance

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

February 15, 2021 by LaneyFace 1 Comment

Executive assistant Lucy Hutton hates her publishing house coworker Josh. Typically well-liked and cute as a button, Lucy’s usual charms failed to break the stony demeanor of her work partner, leading to childish animosity between the two adults. Lucy and Josh’s resentment plays out as a series of rancorous “games” in which the winner revels in getting under the other’s skin.  Their hatred is so visceral that HR frequently intervenes and halts their little hating games. A steamy elevator make-out session changes everything and Lucy […]
