Give a girl a warning she’s going to be mind flipped…only I didn’t say flipped

Forevr by Brian Brown

July 1, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Recently I have read two books that have given me a gut punch for all the right and wrong reasons. Forevr (yes, that is how it is spelled) by Brian Brown, is one of them.  After reading Brown’s book I said to myself: DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANG (but I didn’t say Dang)! What the heck was that? I think I needed to take a dramamine pill before reading. I mean how do you process a thoughtful, dark, a bit sad, a bit too could happen, semi-humours ride through […]

Aztec Empire in Space. Tell me more.

A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine

June 30, 2026 by katie71483 6 Comments

A little while ago, I interviewed G.D. Giant for Quick Questions with a Cannonballer. Of course we talked about books as part of that process. (How could it be otherwise when that’s what we’re here for?) She mentioned that A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine is one of her favorite books. The description she shared is “Aztec Empire in Space,” which, honestly, YES. I’m immediately interested. Then she mentions world building and mysteries and questions about citizenship, colonization, and belonging, and I’m immediately like, […]

Kloud 9: The Star Soldier by AJ O. Mason

June 16, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

By the time I got to chapter two in Kloud 9: The Star Soldier by AJ O. Mason I decided it reminded me of a much lighter Covenant by Lysandra Vuong (and I mean much much much lighter) and later on it would remind me of Heartstopper by Alice Oseman and Strange Bedfellows by Ariel Slamet Ries (both on the lighter side). Or at least the dynamic between Kal and Cosmo and the protagonists of the other stories are similar. The big difference is that […]

Closing Some Doors, Some Still Open

This Inevitable Ruin by Matt Dinniman

June 14, 2026 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Capture the flag is now the name of the game in This Inevitable Ruin aka Dungeon Crawl Carl 7, or really more like capture the enemy castles and hold the throne rooms, and probably also kill all members of the enemy group. This is also the Faction Wars part, meaning that some of the other teams actually are from outside the dungeon, and are paying to participate. A lot of the outside groups are now eligible to directly participate, and several do. There’s an interesting […]

A Pokemon-Magic-Yugi-Oh Mishmash

The Eye of the Bedlam Bride by Matt Dinniman

June 14, 2026 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

The Eye of the Bedlam Bride one the one hand takes on the geek card game as its general dungeon challenge (it’s a cross between Magic the Gathering and Yugi-Oh, with a hint of morbid Pokemon, kinda), and on the other it’s set on sort of a ghost Earth, making it a chance for some significant backstory as well as possible foreshadowing. If it wasn’t clear already, the game-master AI is also becoming more of an element of the story, which could both be the […]

Moss’d in Space by Rebecca Thorne

As your best friend and life support system, I require you to be less stupid.

Moss’d in Space by Rebecca Thorne

June 13, 2026 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Well this was delightful! I knew that I would enjoy Rebecca Thorne’s Moss’d in Space, narrated by Natalie Naudus and Dylan Reilly Fitzpatrick, but I was still surprised by how much. I liked Thorne’s Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea, though I thought it rambled a bit. Moss’d has the growing found family and community building of Treason, but it’s a much tighter story. I enjoyed every moment of it. In the far future, human live mostly on space stations and one planet (not Earth). Citizenship on the planet […]
