2016 began with a re-read of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods. I’m a big proponent of re-reading, and American Gods, in particular, is one book where I can always be certain of discovering something new. Gaiman packs quite a lot into his story; if you’re into road trips, or Americana, or mythology, or murder mysteries, or romance, or ghost stories (and I am into all of those things)…it’s cliché to say that there is something for everyone here, but it’s the truth. Of more interest than […]
Dragons, Democracy and the Napoleonic Wars!

A great start to 2016
This read was a fascinating dive into magical realism, not a genre I frequent very often. The story flips between Mexico City 1988 and Mexico City 2009 from chapter to chapter and centers on a trio of friends. Meche, Sebastian, & Daniela, all fifteen, are the freaks of their high school. They’re on the poor side and not exactly conventionally attractive, but they enjoy each other’s company while longing to rise in social standing. Meche had always been told stories of magic by her grandmother, […]
Where do I even start with IT?
I never had any desire to read this book. However, a friend recommended it to me, and then I couldn’t resist. It’s super long. It took me about two months to read, and I only read it at night before going to bed. It was NOT a good bedtime story. I don’t think I had many nightmares though. My problem with Stephen King has always been his extreme attention to detail. His books are mostly all long. However, this book really needed to be long! […]
Love and eggs are best when they’re fresh
CANNONBALL!!! The City Thieves keeps turning up in my life. JB and I both have two copies of it, I think. Either that, or they are moving around our respective houses on their own. Which is creepy if you think about it. So after literally tripping over it for a few months, I finally picked it up and gave it a whirl. Told in first person as a story to the narrator’s grandson, The City Thieves is the story of Lev Beniov, a young Russian […]
Secret society stuff – kinda nightmarish
Let me just start out by saying that this is book 1 of a trilogy. However, the other two books aren’t released yet, so hold your horses. The minute I was done with this book, I searched for the rest of its friends. I was happy to learn that there were more books coming. I was sad to learn that I’d have to wait for them!!! This is the first book I’ve read by PJ Manney. I don’t think it’ll be the last. Right away, […]
