Timely Read as the International Order Starts to Shift

Intimacies by Katie Kitamura

February 8, 2026 by matt_thac Leave a Comment

When reflecting on my identity, my thoughts often circle the idea of being WEIRD (Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic) and how that perspective is, in fact, ‘weird’ to most of the world. This sense of being an ‘other’ permeates the book, alongside the post-modern realization that we can never truly ‘know’ another person. The story is told through an unnamed translator in The Hague, transitioning from New York into a life of clinical, European detachment. Whether she is navigating a relationship with a man […]

This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me

Wherever I had ended up, this world wasn’t limited by the pages of the books I knew.

This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews

February 7, 2026 by Emmalita 1 Comment

This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me is a chonk. And just like when people called my former dog a chonk, a land seal, a door stop, I think every word is precious. The audiobook is 21 hours and 34 minutes, and I’ve listened to it twice in a week. Kristen Sieh is a fantastic narrator. I’m probably going to listen a few more times before the book comes out March 31. We meet Maggie on her third day in Kair Toren, the capital city of […]

Still into You

He’s not supposed to still be funny after we’ve broken up.

Still into You by Erin Connor

February 5, 2026 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I enjoyed Erin Connor’s Still Into You so much, like so, so much. The primary narrator Karissa Vacker, was great. The interstitials were narrated by William DeMerritt, Donald Chang, James Fouhey, Robb Moreira, and Greg Chun voicing each of the members of the band, Final Revelations. Still Into You is a second chance romance between two people who so clearly want to be together. Sloan, is a music journalist given the opportunity to interview a band that famously doesn’t give interviews. She had an intense […]

A Beast Slinks Towards Beijing

Brutally beautiful historical fantasy

A Beast Slinks Towards Beijing by Alice Evelyn Yang

February 4, 2026 by LB Leave a Comment

I was immediately drawn to this book, but struggled with eyeball reading, so I was so glad when I got an advance listening copy as well, especially so I wouldn’t be butchering the Chinese words and intonations. This is really intense and deals with a lot of really difficult topics, and it’s hard to say any of the characters (though especially Ba) were likable, but the ending left me with a feeling of hope and healing. Told through three (four?) perspectives, A Beast Slinks Towards […]

Back to Yale, back to Yale, to prove to dad that I won’t fail (sung in Billy Madison “back to school” tune)

Ninth House (Alex Stern #1) by Leigh Bardugo

Hell Bent (Alex Stern #2) by Leigh Bardugo

January 30, 2026 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

I don’t know you guys are going to believe this, but I made up that title. It’s not a real song. I was just thinking of “Back to Yale”, since this book is set at Yale, and my brain did the rest! As my boss said today, “your words aren’t wordsing”, so we’ll see how this goes! I read Ninth House almost exactly three years ago. I think I even reviewed it here for whatever CBR we were on in January 2023. I really liked […]

“What else is life but a string of outcomes beyond our control?”

The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion: Vols. 1-3 by Beth Brower

January 29, 2026 by narfna Leave a Comment

This is a wild thing to say, but I’m saying it, so stay with me. This series is Dungeon Crawler Carl for the Jane Austenites. I’m not even finished with it yet and I already know that. It’s the kind of story you read once, probably in a very short time, then immediately go back in for a re-read or five. This story is—aside from having lovable characters and a certain anti-authoritarian bent—nothing like Dungeon Crawler Carl. And yet. The Unselected Journals of Emma M. […]
