Am I a masochist?

Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

September 7, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

This is one that collected dust on my to-read list for years, forgotten about, until I saw a review here recently. Upon seeing that review, I immediately put in a hold request for it at the library, even though they only had a large print version, randomly, which always makes me feel self-conscious (I don’t need the large print, I swear!). I’ve barely listened to the author’s music, but the title, and the book’s acclaim, had me quite curious. You know, because I’m a masochist, […]

Best left to the confines of a college writing course

The Last White Man by Mohsin Hamid

September 7, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

When I saw this title at Target, I immediately grabbed it, read the opening lines, and added it to my to-read list. A town full of people suddenly starting to all turn black one day? I wanna see where he goes with this. Yet, with all that potential, all the doors you open up to yourself with that concept, he instead whittled it down to a pretty personal story about a man and a woman and their parents. To me, this felt like the sort […]

Well, we aren’t calling you truthers…

Family of Liars by E. Lockhart

September 7, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

Right out of the gate, I’ve gotta be honest and say I forget most of We Were Liars, the book this is the prequel story to. I distinctly remember the grand reveal, the “we were liars” moment, catching me wildly off guard, but I only have the loosest idea of what occurred in those pages. Thankfully, this prequel book isn’t the type to rely heavily upon having intimate knowledge of the other book to appreciate it. I’d probably have enjoyed it plenty more if the […]

I’m Glad Her Mom Died Too…

I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

August 27, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith 1 Comment

Growing up, I never could get into iCarly. Trust me, I tried. With my love for Drake & Josh, I certainly tuned in for Miranda Cosgrove’s star vehicle, but not for long. Maybe I’d aged out of Nickelodeon’s live-action content by that point. Who knows? What I do know is that Cosgrove was outshined by her co-star, Jennette McCurdy, the one who only got second billing. And, knowing what I know now, having read her book, I’m simultaneously impressed by and saddened for her. McCurdy […]

Could’ve done with a few more notes…

Notes on an Execution by Danya Kukafka

August 27, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

The problem with picking up books based solely upon their opening lines is you are routinely caught off guard by what comes after that initial bit. With this book, I just assumed what was in store for me was another wrongful conviction story. Boy, I learned right quick that I was dead wrong (pun intended) on that one. I’d have known that if I’d read any of the blurbs on the back, but I tend to skip those. I will say that I was pleasantly surprised […]

Or is nothing missing after all?

The Missing Piece by Shel Silverstein

August 27, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

Whenever people talk about Shel Silverstein, they inevitably bring up Where the Sidewalk Ends or The Giving Tree. I know that was the extent of my knowledge of his work. Outside of that, I never saw him mentioned. So, when I saw this book in a bin at Goodwill, I grabbed it immediately, interested to see what else he’d written. Turns out, I like this more than the books he’s most known for. It’s a rather simple story; a circle with a missing piece goes looking […]
