The Best Alphabet Book

P is For Pterodactyl by Raj Haldar & Chris Carpenter

May 11, 2020 by Tracy Leave a Comment

I don’t recall how I first heard of this book, but I bought it for myself just for kicks, and it’s a hoot. This is a children’s book, but only after your kids know the alphabet pretty well, or it will confuse them. The authors find words that don’t sound like they start with the letters they actually start with, like pterodactyl, knight, gnat, etc. There’s even a word that starts with a silent B, which I had no idea existed. It’s for bdellium (a […]

A Lot to Digest (Pun Intended Because I Can’t Help Myself)

Binge Eating Disorder: The Journey to Recovery and Beyond by Amy Pershing and Chevese Turner

May 6, 2020 by Tracy Leave a Comment

I decided to use quarantine time to read various books I’ve bought at professional development trainings but had never had a chance to get to, and I really wanted to start with this one, both for how it can help my clients and because it’s relevant to myself. Amy Pershing is the primary author, with Chevese Turner providing a narrative section at the beginning of each chapter. It appears to be written for both the layperson and the professional, with the understanding that it would […]

Young, and Intense, Love

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

May 6, 2020 by Tracy 1 Comment

I’m not giving this book a rating because how much I liked it isn’t the same as how good I think the book is. So let me start with this: Eleanor & Park is an excellent YA romance. Eleanor has just moved back in with her mom, stepfather, and 4 siblings. On her first day in her new school, she doesn’t know where to sit on the bus and Park reluctantly makes room for her. For days they ride silently on the bus, but then […]

The Description Does Not Do It Justice

Wall of Silence by Tracy Buchanan

April 28, 2020 by Tracy Leave a Comment

I liked this book SO much more than I thought I would. When I first learned of it, possibly here on CBR, and read the description on Amazon, it did not appeal to me. But the book is so much better than the description leads you (or me, at least) to believe. The main character is Melissa, who comes home from work one day to find her 3 children standing by her husband, Patrick, who is lying unconscious on the floor after having been stabbed. […]

Jumping on a Couple Bandwagons

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang

Attachments: A Novel by Rainbow Rowell

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

April 25, 2020 by Tracy 2 Comments

I have a pretty lengthy TBR list from perusing CBR, and when some rough life stuff came up recently and I needed some light reading, I decided to try a few books that Cannonballers have recommended that I thought would fit the bill. I’d seen The Kiss Quotient reviewed several times, and I know Rainbow Rowell is a favorite around these parts. So, in the order I read them: The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang. First of all, hoo boy is there a lot of […]

“And, Really, I Was Fine, Fine, Fine.”

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

March 14, 2020 by Tracy Leave a Comment

Word of mouth, including from you wonderful Cannonballers, finally got me to read this book. It was not at all what I was expecting, but I have zero regrets. Eleanor Oliphant is an odd duck. She’s worked at a low-level job for years without any ambitions of change. She lives alone, has no friends, and has a dearth of social skills, and from early on in the novel we become aware that she has a complicated history. All of her days are the same: work, […]
