CBR12 Book Bingo – Repeat

Beach Read by Emily Henry

September 30, 2020 by randirock 2 Comments

Oh, how I loved this book. It’s not an innovative story-line, but it sure does the trick! Polar opposites strike up a challenge and fall in love in the process. Swoooon! While the concept is as old as time, author Emily Henry makes it fresh with modern background details that bring the characters and setting to life. When I read a good romance, I can feel it throughout my body. The words pulse through my bones. I carry the characters with me for days after. […]

CBR12 Book Bingo – Green

Rich People Problems by Kevin Kwan

September 29, 2020 by randirock Leave a Comment

To round out the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy, I had to read Rich People Problems. I say “had to” because this was my least favorite of the three. However, I felt invested in the characters, and I love to tie a nice bow on a good series, which, altogether, I think it was. It was certainly an entertaining distraction from the events of 2020. It’s been about two months since I’ve read Rich People Problems, and I think it speaks to the quality of the book when I say that I […]

CBR12 Book Bingo – Friendship

Big Summer by Jennifer Weiner

September 28, 2020 by randirock Leave a Comment

Big Summer was not what I was expecting, but it was thoroughly enjoyable all the same. While the reviews on Amazon and Goodreads run the gamut from one to five stars, I wouldn’t swing too far in either direction. I feel this nicely fits in the three-to-four star range. It contains all of the elements of a fun beach read, even if some aspects feel squeezed in. Big Summer tells the story of Daphne Berg, a plus-size influencer, and Drue Cavanaugh, a nauseatingly beautiful socialite. Six years […]

CBR12 Book Bingo – Pandemic

All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood

September 4, 2020 by randirock Leave a Comment

This book may have been the one that caused me to take a looooong break between Cannonball Read posts. All the Ugly and Wonderful Things was named a Book of the Year by the Book of the Month Club, so I know people liked it. I just don’t know how comfortable I feel saying out loud that I loved this book. Well, there we go, I said it. This book has stuck with me since I read it four months ago. It is gritty, raw, […]

CBR12 Book Bingo – Fresh Start

Still Life by Louise Penny

September 4, 2020 by randirock 5 Comments

“This book is stupid,” I said to my husband as I finished the last page of Still Life and closed the book. Needless to say, I was not a fan. It was boring and weird. I honestly cannot even remember why this was in my pile of books to read. My best guess is that the library accidentally added it to my pile of check-out requests. I’m going to share the summary from the book jacket because the only thing I remember is that the murder victim is […]

CBR12 Book Bingo – I Wish…

When Life Gives You Pears: The Healing Power of Family, Faith, and Funny People by Jeannie Gaffigan

September 4, 2020 by randirock Leave a Comment

“I had charts with every appointment, every activity, color-coded by child. Everything under control. Sure, I had throbbing headaches and trouble hearing out of my left ear. I didn’t have time for this. I pushed myself harder. Finally, at the recommendation of the kids’ pediatrician, to whom I’d admitted not being able to hear, I squeezed in an MRI.” Comedy is my love language, and Jim and Jeannie Gaffigan are two of the funniest. This is my CBR12 Book Bingo choice for “I wish…” because […]
