The Falcon Cannot Hear the Falconer

January 14, 2014 by narfna 10 Comments

Okay, wow. Wasn’t a good idea to finish this while sitting in a cafe. People think I’m barking. I’m not going to go in depth on this one for two reasons: a) If I were to do that I would spoil the hell out of anyone reading this, and b) the emotions are a little too raw for me to even want to. This book affected me. To sum it up (very) briefly, Tell the Wolves I’m Home is about June Elbus, a fourteen year-old […]

Egg . . . because his bald head looks like an egg. Get it?

NOTE: The Hedge Knight was originally published in the Legends I anthology, edited by Robert Silverberg. As the stories/novellas in the collection are set in previously existing fictional universes, and I have only read two of the series in question, I am only reviewing Martin’s novella at this time. This was really fun and I’m kind of mad at myself as a Martin fan for not checking it out sooner. If you like A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones at all, you should […]

He quotes Tenacious D in the epigraph. That should tell you everything you need to know.

Don’t get me wrong. I like Tenacious D. Their self-titled first album was practically the soundtrack to my first year of college (much to the regret of my roommate). If you called “Tribute” the greatest song in the world without irony in your voice, I wouldn’t punch you in the face. I once ate at Zanzibar in Las Vegas solely for the purpose of eating there while thinking of this song (link NSFW . . . trust me, don’t do it). My point is: hating […]

Next Time Watch Out For Space Icebergs

January 6, 2014 by narfna 2 Comments

A bit conflicted about this one. I pretty much knew what I was getting into with it, but a lot of people had given it glowing reviews, so maybe my expectations were a little too high this time around. And don’t get me wrong, it was a good book. Competently written. Good characters with actual brains in their heads. A pretty interesting sci-fi mystery. A romance. But something kept me back from fully immersing myself in the story. Something about it just didn’t *connect* with […]

Once Upon a Time in Old New York

January 6, 2014 by narfna 5 Comments

1899. On a ship bound for New York in the middle of the Atlantic, a Golem comes to life. Soon after, her master and sole reason for living, dies. A little ways across the water, a Jinni turned human emerges from more than a thousand years of captivity in a flask in the shop of a tinsmith in lower Manhattan, thousands of miles away from his home in the Syrian desert. Both are out of time and out of place. Who are they in such […]
