I am a devourer of almost all things pop culture, but especially books. I already make it a goal to read around 150 books yearly, so I figured why not do some good for the world while I do it? I mostly read fiction, with some graphic novels and nonfiction mixed in there for good measure.

Another YA takedown of rape culture

November 6, 2018 by MrsLangdonAlger 2 Comments

This book reminds me a ton of another book I did a passionately positive review of earlier this year, I Stop Somewhere. The Nowhere Girl is another rageful takedown of rape culture, and I hope this becomes an entire young adult subgenre, as hard as these types of books can be to read. In The Nowhere Girls, the actual victim of the central crime is not a main character: instead, the story is set in a small town in which a teen girl was gang raped, […]

The Best in a Great Series

November 1, 2018 by MrsLangdonAlger Leave a Comment

The Tiffany Aching books are tied for my favorite books in all of Discworld (the other favorite being the City Watch books, because I love Sam Vimes), and based on the title of this review you won’t be shocked to find that I Shall Wear Midnight is my favorite of all the Tiffany Aching books. So, why are the Tiffany books tied as favorites? I could go on forever! Tiffany isn’t just a complex female character, she’s a complex young woman who is given a […]

Well That Turned Sexist!

November 1, 2018 by MrsLangdonAlger Leave a Comment

I had an odd experience I’ve never had before reading this book: I recommended it to someone enthusiastically when I was 50% through it, then the next day when I finished it I took back my recommendation with equal enthusiasm and with so much vigor that they immediately removed the book from their wish list. Spoilers will be contained in the review after this point, so read at your own risk: That’s because the book definitely does a good job of making you want to […]

Hooray for Good Sequels!

October 25, 2018 by MrsLangdonAlger 1 Comment

Sequels don’t always do justice to their original books, especially in YA trilogies, and I must admit I was wary going into this one as I had just finished reading all of the “Daughter of Smoke and Bone” trilogy, three books in a row, and found that they faltered as the series went on. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed the trilogy, but I was worried that I’d get the same feeling from those books of hoping that Taylor would stop adding other plot […]

This is Kind of Absolute Garbage

October 15, 2018 by MrsLangdonAlger 2 Comments

I devoured this book in the course of 24 hours…and then promptly realized I kind of hated it. Trigger warning: this book is about incest and extreme abuse, and all of it is described in graphic detail. Some of my issues with this graphic detail will be described in the review, so keep this in mind before reading ahead. As mentioned, the main protagonist of this book, Turtle, is being physically and sexually abused by her loner father, who eschews all social norms because he […]

A Classic, Validating Explainer on Abusive Men

October 11, 2018 by MrsLangdonAlger Leave a Comment

First, I’ll note that this entire book comes with a trigger warning, if that’s not obvious from the title. This 2002 book was written by a man who worked directly with abusive men, and includes many case studies and examples of their abuse, their partners’ experiences, and their mindsets. It is not an easy read. I went into this as a survivor of abuse knowing it would not be an easy read and mentally prepared myself, and it was still very tough. This book was […]
