All That She Carried – a powerful and important book

All That She Carried by Tiya Miles

November 23, 2022 by MarkAbaddon 2 Comments

What can a simple sack tell us about the past? As it turns out, an absolutely incredible amount. Sometime in the 1850s, a slave named Rose sent her daughter Ashley out of South Carolina to escape slavery with a sack that contained a tattered dress, 3 handfuls of pecans, a braid of her mom’s hair and love. With these talismanic items, Ashley (who was still a child) was able to escape the hellish conditions of the South to freedom in the North. How do we […]

Injustice: Gods Among Us Year One

Injustice: Gods Among Us Year One by Tom Taylor

September 27, 2022 by MarkAbaddon Leave a Comment

My experience has been that most comic based on video games are…less than stellar. And when I have not even played the game on which it is based, I am even more reluctant to read the book. However, my son’s oldest friend has been asking me to read this for several years and so I started it this month. I am so glad I listened to him as this was a fun and interesting read. The main concept is that Superman “Breaks bad” and Batman […]

Winter People – a unique take on reviving the dead

Winter People by Jennifer McMahon

August 23, 2022 by MarkAbaddon 4 Comments

For the life of me, I really wish I could remember what site or person recommended the Winter People to me, because I want to thank them, as it was a refreshingly good read. Pet Sematary is one of my favorite Stephen King novels and this story plays with similar themes but places it in more of a historical and feminist context. The story takes place over 100 years and can switch times without warning, which I found a bit disorienting at first. You get […]

Fragile Things A Solid Collection of Stories from Gaiman

Fragile Things by Neil Gaiman

August 4, 2022 by MarkAbaddon Leave a Comment

So, and interesting story on why I re-read this collection. Being the Gaiman nerd I am, I purchased a 1st edition immediately when it came out and then had Neil sign it for my son who was very young at the time. That son is going to college in a few weeks and I decided to read the collection again before he leaves as a reminder of days gone by. My impression of the work has not changed, it is a good short story collection […]

The Lost World by Arthur Conan

The Lost World by Arthur Conan Doyle

April 28, 2022 by MarkAbaddon 1 Comment

As a huge fan of Doyle, and knowing the influence this book has had on fantasy, I saw an edition of The Lost World from a printing in the early 1970s at a used book store and immediately purchased it. Oy, what a mistake. I am aware that Holmes has been accused of being misogynistic and there are elements of racism within those books but man did Doyle let his id out of control in this novel. I literally hated every single one of these […]

Becoming – a beacon of hope in dark times

Becoming by Michelle Obama

March 1, 2022 by MarkAbaddon Leave a Comment

There are books one reads for enjoyment, others to intellectually challenge yourself, others for education. This is a book that can fill you with hope and just make you feel better about the world. I knew a bit about Michelle prior to reading this autobiography but after reading it, I had one thought “There really are legitimately good people in politics, who knew?” This is not to say the woman is a saint or a paragon of perfection, she is quite candid about some of […]
