Run Posy Run

In which I surprisingly don’t hate a mafia romance

Run Posy Run by Cate C Wells

July 25, 2022 by llamareadsbooks 5 Comments

CBR14Bingo – Minds: Because the dude’s a freaking psychopath (I KNOW) and one of the main ways he initially interacts with Posy is through playing games, mainly chess Look, I don’t read mafia romance. It’s just not my cup of tea. So the only reason I picked this up was because I needed something for the “mafia” square on the Ripped Bodice Summer Bingo. I fully expected this to be a joyless slog, but instead I found an absolutely captivating romance between a psychopath and a […]

Line Drive

“I want someone who can be satisfied with me as I am”

Line Drive by E.M. Lindsey

July 22, 2022 by llamareadsbooks 5 Comments

CBR14Bingo – Series: The second in a series, James’ time constraints from participation in the baseball series is a key part of the romance This is the second book in E.M. Lindsey’s baseball romance series, and hey! I still don’t care about baseball, but luckily the skillful way the author handles relationships makes me willing to pretend I understand the difference between various pitches. Pietro’s best friend James is one of the main characters in this book, and as I really liked him in that […]

“She still didn’t intend to be caged and used.”

If I Were a Weapon by Skye Kilaen

July 21, 2022 by llamareadsbooks 2 Comments

CBR14 Bingo – Font: because the mix of fonts on the cover is pretty cool (and matches the book well), and one of the MCs does calligraphy I’m the sort of person who thinks the world always needs more sapphic sci-fi, so when I realized the author of Glorious Day was writing a near-future one? Immediate grabby hands. Six months ago, alien ships suddenly appeared all over the world, obliterating whatever used to be there. The aliens died almost immediately but the ships released clouds […]

Rescue Me

There is a pitbull named Pumpkin therefore I liked this book

Rescue Me by Lauren Connolly

July 20, 2022 by llamareadsbooks 1 Comment

I’m a big fan of Lauren Connolly’s more recent work, but when I realized this one had a pitbull as a side character? I jumped on it! Much like the dog, this book is sweetly heartwarming while also packing a bit of muscley punch. “I’m sure I can get this right. Pumpkin is meant to be mine, and I’m meant to be hers. We’ll figure out things together.” Dash started working with animals while he was still in jail, and now that’s out on parole, […]

What Moves the Dead

“There aren’t any moors. There’s a sort of heath and a tarn and a mad Englishwoman painting mushrooms.”

What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher

July 17, 2022 by llamareadsbooks 4 Comments

The last T. Kingfisher book I read (The Hollow Places) made me terrified of willow trees and school buses, and now this one made me terrified of rabbits (technically hares, but, ya know). Which is to say, this is another astoundingly imaginative work. While it’s certainly not necessary, I’d recommend reading Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” before this as it’s based on that short story. It gives you a great appreciation for how the author changed (I’d say improved) the story. As […]

Dream On

Basically a zany movie rom-com in book form

Dream On by Angie Hockman

July 17, 2022 by llamareadsbooks Leave a Comment

I’ll be honest: it was the adorable and colorful cover that caught my eye, and then the absolutely bonkers description pulled me in. While I had some quibbles with the plot, it’s very entertaining and I could easily imagine this being a blockbuster rom-com movie. “So I’m the man of your dreams?” A breathy laugh escapes me. “Kind of.” “Okay then.” Cass has it all. She has a loving boyfriend, she just passed the bar, and she already has a job offer at one of […]
