One of the greatest books of all time!  I laughed. I cried. I made my husband read it.  I will be gifting a copy to everyone I know.  Winter Solstice Holiday of Choice shopping done! I had no idea, but in 2017, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah opened up a museum near Trump Tower featuring a compilation of some of the 45th President’s most famous (read” notorious, peculiar, insane) tweets.  Then in 2018, luckily for those of us who missed the exhibit or don’t […]

This read took no time at all

August 16, 2018 by LanierHgts Leave a Comment

I admit that I only picked this up because I was looking for something to fit the “Not My Wheelhouse” category in #CBR10Bingo.  I found it while searching my local library, having concluded that I would not typically read science fiction or graphic novels.  So this seemed to fit the category twice over. I remember attempting to read this book when I was in high school, and hating it.  I don’t think that I ever finished it.  When Disney came out with a movie version […]

Sex Ed for the Elementary School Set

August 6, 2018 by LanierHgts 2 Comments

I decided to review this book because I needed something from the banned or challenged list (for #cbr10bingo), and was amazed (or not) to find this one on the list.  I only recently read this with my 11 year old son, so thought a review might be helpful to other parents. I am admittedly not an expert on sex ed books for kids.  But I decided to buy this book upon some recommendation or other from a trusted source.  Ever prepared, I have had the […]

A Murder Mystery and a Family History

August 3, 2018 by LanierHgts 1 Comment

It has been a long time since I have read a non-fiction book that I could not put down. Maybe it is because it reads like the murder mysteries that I am partial to, or maybe because I could hear the author’s voice in every word. Whatever the reason, Twenty-Six Seconds: A Personal History of the Zapruder Film was exquisite. Written by the granddaughter of Abraham Zapruder, the book takes the reader through the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the home movie that was […]

Hot in Maine

August 3, 2018 by LanierHgts Leave a Comment

This book was given to me in a “swag bag” from some event or other that I participated in recently.  I initially pooh-poohed the book away because I generally don’t read romance novels.  But I found myself needing an easy, mindless read to pass the time on a long flight, so I decided to give this one a try.  This is not my preferred genre, so maybe my expectations were particularly low, but I found the book better than I expected.  I did not love […]

Classic Worth Revisiting

August 3, 2018 by LanierHgts Leave a Comment

I recently read this as a read-aloud book with my 10 year old son.  He found it at the library and thought it looked interesting, but found that the language was a bit confusing, so we decided to do it as a read aloud, so that we could stop and discuss whatever he did not understand. I had initially read this book years ago, and am glad that I had the opportunity to go back to it.  I had forgotten how funny and rather exciting […]
