A Story About How Great Books Are

The Last Bookshop in London by Madeline Martin

May 15, 2023 by LanierHgts Leave a Comment

I found this in one of the many Free Little Library boxes in my neighborhood. Admittedly I chose it for it’s title. This story starts with Grace Bennett and her friend, Vivienne (Viv), two small town country girls arriving in London full of youth an energy and ready to live it up. They are 23. It is 1939. A series of bad family circumstances force them to leave their village.  Both women move into the house of Mrs. Weatherford, Grace’s mother’s long-time friend, and her […]

Spoiler: Our Criminal Justice System is Broken

Trell: Nothing But The Truth by Dick Lehr

May 15, 2023 by LanierHgts 3 Comments

I recently took my daughter, (Bibliophile here on CBR), to a local book store to spend some gift money she had received. She chose this book after one of the staff recommended it, and I said it sounded interesting. You should soon see a review from her about this book but you get mine first. Then you can read the book and decide who is right. 🤣 Perhaps it was my background in law or because criminal justice was the area I was always interested […]

Thank you Crystalclear!

From Bibliophile (Jr. Cannonballer who does not yet have her own account but will next year):  Thank you! When I opened the package and saw all the wonderful books my first reaction was “this is very exciting!” I have been wanting these books for a while and can’t wait to read them! I also really like the bookmarks – especially the ginko leaves. I have always liked the shape of these leaves and there is a ginko tree right outside of where I eat lunch. From […]

Book Exchange Win Again

November 30, 2021 by LanierHgts 3 Comments

I am so lucky yet again this year for the fab gift! Thank you FrancieNolan! I have not read Louise Penny, but am excited to do so! I was told that in reading them I will need to plan a Canadian vacation and also get some croissants to eat while I read.  Would you agree with this assessment? If so, I will get right on that! 🤣

Ponyboy is Still Gold

The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton

May 6, 2021 by LanierHgts 5 Comments

I first read this book when I was a teen and remember liking it. At the time I probably liked the movie more because it starred many of the teen-crush pack. I also remember being particularly struck that S.E. Hinton had to use her initials to publish so that people would not know she was a woman and discount her work. I came across this book again in a box of books I have been saving for my kids for when they became a bit […]
