I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. Unfortunately, This Was Too Much of a Middle of the Trilogy Filler Novel

Archenemies by Marissa Meyer

August 23, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I might be remembering incorrectly, but I feel like the first novel in this new series, Renegades, had somewhat mixed reviews.  I actually enjoyed it because I enjoy super hero stories (just because Brandon Sanderson’s Steelheart trilogy exists and is amazing, doesn’t mean there isn’t space to explore other stories like this). Unfortunately, I can’t say the same about Archenemies. Renegades included a lot of set up mixed with plot development and action as well as an amazing reveal at the end.  With that, I […]

Time is a River

The River of No Return by Bee Ridgway

August 23, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This was a weird one for me.  It has an interesting premise, and it sets up the beginning so well, but then I am not entirely sure where the author was going with it.  On the one hand, she sets up quite a few things that are never resolved so I assume she may have wanted to use this novel as starting off point for a series but it is almost to boring to be a series.  You can’t hint at a lot of interesting […]

Fitting Conclusion to a Solid King Story

End of Watch by Stephen King

August 23, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

In the six years since Bill Hodges and his odd ball team thwarted Brady Hartsfield’s attempt to blow up a concert, Bill and Holly have run the agency Finders Keepers, being official partners rather than boss and employee ever since the case in the novel Finders Keepers.  Jerome is taking a semester off from Harvard to work with Habitat for Humanity in Arizona.  Bill has even stopped his regular visits to Hartsfield’s hospital room to check in on the status of the recovery.  In other […]

Choose Your Own Austin Adventure

The Austen Playbook by Lucy Parker

August 23, 2019 by Jen K 1 Comment

Lucy Parker’s London Celebrities series has been consistently good but the one right before this was not quite as fun as the others since it explored a character dealing with recovering after an emotionally abusive and manipulative relationship.  The Austen Playbook is back to being a lighter, fun romance that I really enjoyed. It even involves past family drama! Freddy Carlton is a theatrical actress, part of a family of performers.  Her grandmother was renowned as an actress and playwright, with one play specifically being […]

A Slight Change in the Formula

The Clockmaker's Daughter by Kate Morton

August 23, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Over the years, Kate Morton has turned into a must buy for me.  She is a bit of a comfort read – family mysteries uncovered, slightly tragic stories with the potential for hope and better in future generations.  There’s always a twist and turn, but she still manages to surprise and create interesting characters. The Clockmaker’s Daughter is a bit of a break in the norm for her.  While in most ways, it is like her previous novels, it is also more focused on a […]

Wicked and the Wallflower by Sarah McLean

August 23, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This novel has been sitting in my Kindle since it came out last year, and since the sequel came out this month, I decided it was time to finally read it.  I didn’t start reading romance until the late spring/early summer of 2015 (I had tried a book or two before), and along with Tessa Dare and Lisa Kleypas, Sarah McLean was one of the authors that got me hooked – in the case of Dare and McLean, I started with the bookish heroines mixing […]
