I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. But could I have some of the cake?

The Enchanted Greenhouse by Sarah Beth Durst

August 3, 2025 by Jen K 1 Comment

Bingo Square: Purple (maybe I am colorblind but it feels like there is purple filter overlaying this or something) This was fine. Sometimes I can’t tell whether it’s my mood specifically when it comes to cozy fantasy or if it is the book but it’s a bit of a hit or miss genre for me. It’s hard to find that right balance between creating a world that feels cozy but also has just enough of a hook or plot to keep the reader engaged. This […]

The Jock and the Nerd, 20 years later

Writing Mr. Wrong by Kelley Armstrong

August 3, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square – Arts (one character is a writer – this could have also fit into Play with the hockey but I have something else in mind for that square) I was surprised when I saw that Kelley Armstrong was writing contemporary romances since I had first discovered her through her urban fantasy series, Women of the Otherworld– then again, I read broadly across genres so it makes sense that an author would have a variety of interests. This is the second of her contemporary […]

Novella Round Up – Expanding Urban Fantasy universes

How Green This Land, How Blue this Sea by Mira Grant

Please Do Not Taunt the Octopus by Mira Grant

Sanctuary by Ilona Andrews

August 3, 2025 by Jen K 1 Comment

I read these novellas at various points this year and figured at this point, it might just be easiest to do a quick post covering all 3 to get them done. The first two are part of the same series. So Green This Land, So Blue This Sea – 3 stars The one follows one of the side characters from Shawn and George’s original blog as he visits some of their network in Australia to write a news story about Australia from an outsider’s perspective. […]

From Tedious to Fine to Enraging

The Love Haters by Katherine Center

July 22, 2025 by Jen K 6 Comments

Bingo Square – Green (the leaves are green – I wasn’t originally planning on using this and wanted something even more green but after writing the review and remembering how much I disliked the book, I decided I should at least get a bingo square out of it). I stumbled on Katherine Center after someone reviewed The Bodyguard and have found her novels since to be dependably pleasant reads – Hello Stranger, The Rom-Commers. As a result, I was looking forward to The Love Haters […]

Paranormal Activity but Passive-Aggressive

The Book of Cold Cases by Simone St James

July 22, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: B (Book) This wasn’t my favorite St. James, though it was still an entertaining read. But when reading a Simone St. James novel, I guess I just want a bit more ghost story to it all. Of course there is a ghost and a supernatural connection because it is after all a novel by Simone St. James but after a spooky set up in the beginning, the supernatural elements feel a bit less relevant for the plot than in some of her other […]

The Path to Eo’s Dream

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

Golden Son by Pierce Brown

Morning Star by Pierce Brown

July 9, 2025 by Jen K 4 Comments

Bingo Squares: School (Red Rising is set at the Institution, a school of sorts) Black (Golden Son but all of them have mostly black covers) Citizen (Morning Star but all of them deal with the idea of class and status and citizens’ rights/place in society) I’m not generally a big re-reader though I have been doing so more over the years than I used to when I was trying to read all the books. Yet, somehow this is now my third time reading the original Red […]
