I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. Jen K's Reviews:

Maybe it would work as a movie but needed more for a book

Water Moon by Samantha Sotto Yambao

May 31, 2025 by Jen K 1 Comment

I saw some of the blurbs and reviews make references to Studio Ghibli and The Night Circus as comparisons for this book but they are superficial comparisons – this novel doesn’t come close to reaching the emotional depths of The Night Circus, even as it takes the reader on a tour through a magical world. I have never actually seen a Studio Ghibli movie (I know, huge gap) but I have seen trailers, and I know vaguely from paying attention to pop culture how deeply […]

Two engaging but not perfect romances

Four weekends and a funeral by Ellie Palmer

In a Jam by Kate Canterbary

May 26, 2025 by Jen K 2 Comments

I read these two romances back in March, and for both, I enjoyed them while also not loving them. It mostly felt like nitpicky character reason that did make sense in context but also maybe just went a bit further than needed? 4 weekends and a funeral Alison and Sam dated briefly but ended things on good terms shortly before he died in an accident. At the funeral, Alison discovers that Sam’s parents think she is still the girlfriend and goes along with it at […]

Lots of climatic battles

The Fury of the Gods by John Gwynne

May 26, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I finished this one back in February, shortly after reading the second novel in the series, so my memory is a bit lighter on details. This final novel follows the same five POVs as the previous novel (two were added in the second novel) and thus shows all sides of the pending battle. Elvar is in the middle of some of more interesting and far reaching plot points from a political perspective even if Orka remains the best character. Gudvarr remains that villain you love […]

“Bourbon in the blood and blood in the bourbon”

The Bourbon Thief by Tiffany Reisz

May 20, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This book feels like a throw back – the characters, the melodrama and everything of the main story honestly felt like they were from a novel written in the 90s, back when Danielle Steele reigned. After Cooper McQueen discovers that the woman he brought home last night is about to walk out with a million dollar bottle of bourbon, she offers him a trade – she will tell him a story and then, she will leave with the bottle. Being bored and rich, he decides […]

Invading plants from outer space

Overgrowth by Mira Grant

May 18, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Seanan McGuire is an incredibly prolific writer – I tend to prefer the things she publishes under Seanan McGuire but I still check out her Mira Grant work. Under that pen name, I like her Newsflesh series (zombies) and her mermaid novellas most. This novel is my least favorite thing I have ever read by Seanan McGuire. I wasn’t sure about the premise even going in but I figured Grant/McGuire would have an interesting take. It started strong, beginning with the horror of a little girl’s […]

Cover of Jackie Lau’s Time Loops and Meet Cutes

Groundhog Day with a food scene

Time Loops and Meet Cutes by Jackie Lau

May 13, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This is only my second Jackie Lau novel (I think, if Goodreads is accurate). I actually quite liked the other novel I read by her and yet … I don’t know, sometimes, you just have those authors that you check out, you enjoy but they just also don’t quite pull you in enough to make you want to go read everything else they have written, for whatever the reason. I generally like a good time loop story, though (hello Palm Springs, Groundhog Day and that […]
