Books have been a part of my life from a very young age . I'm currently being ruled over by 3 cats (Rafferty, Bodhi Rook & Yersinia Pestis), who I can mostly get not to chew on book covers. Lately, I'll read anything, though Science Fiction and Romance will always be on the bottom of the pile.

Life is too short for all these tomorrows

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

April 17, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

Having read this book I now understand how people felt in BtVs when they said “I’d rather have a railroad spike through my head than listen to that awful stuff!” I’d rather have railroad spikes or hot pokers shoved into my eyes rather than have to read this book again. The author seems to have read the old saying “that if you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit:, only I’m afraid he believes he’s brilliant. I know he writes as if he […]

April 17, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

Living on a secluded island mansion, the Lighthouse family allows no outsider into their lives. The parents, obsessed with all things true crime, named their four children after various victims; the eldest, Charlie (the Lindbergh baby), his twin Tate (after Sharon Tate), Dahlia (after the Black Dahlia), and her twin Andrew (after Lizzie Borden’s father). Everything is fine in their lives until the sudden disappearance of Andy one night, with barely a note left behind. Back on the island to bury her father after ten […]

The Whipping Boy, With Magic Doctors and Intrigue.

Sword Catcher by Cassandra Clare

April 15, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

In the city-state of Castellane, everyone from the wealthiest of nobles to the most debauched of criminals has one common thread running through their lives: the neverending search for more wealth, more power, the next hedonistic thrill to drive off boredom. Kel is an orphan, in the Palace for one reason-to be the Sword Catcher, the body double of the royal heir, Prince Conor Aurelian. He and Conor are as close as brothers, but his ultimate destiny is to die for Conor; that is the […]

Nero Wolfe but make it Japanese

The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett

April 14, 2025 by bjornsnipe 3 Comments

When a book’s premise is basically “freaky murders happen in a Japan-like country dealing with a Kaiju problem, and the murders need to be solved by an uber-intelligent shut-in and her magically altered assistant”, you’re going to pique my interest. And this book delivered its premise in all the best ways. In the world of Daretana, there are walls built to keep the Kaiju from invading, where there blood can work strange magical changes and contagions are rampant. In one of the elite mansions, a […]

“It is always best when discussing serious matters to do so around a teapot.”

The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters: A Novel by Gordon Dahlquist

April 14, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

It begins with a letter of rejection from Miss Celestial “Celeste” Temple’s fiancé, Roger Bascombe, delivered on her maid’s silver tray. But her quest for answers (surely nobody dumps someone by message!) takes her to the forbidding Harschmort Manor, where she finds acts of licentiousness, violence, and hedonism. But there she will also find two allies: Cardinal Chang, a scarred assassin in red, brutal but with the soul of a poet. And Captain-Surgeon Abelard Svenson, at once fumbling and heroic. Both of whom, like her, […]

“Hatred is the sincerest form of flattery.”

If We Were Villains: A Novel by M.L. Rio

April 14, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

“If We Were Villains” tells the story of Oliver Marks, finishing his ten-year sentence in prison for murder, met at the gate by Joseph Colborne, the detective on the case. Never believing Oliver was guilty, Colburne wants to know what actually happened all those years ago, back when Oliver was a lower-income student on scholarship at the Dellecher Classical Conservatory, an exclusive and cliquish art school. In on an acting scholarship, Oliver joined the acting set and their obsession with all things Shakespeare, where he […]
