Tusks of Extinction

The Tusks of Extinction by Ray Naylor

December 26, 2025 by Fiat.Luxury 1 Comment

This is a well-crafted little novella. The consciousness of our protagonist, Damira, has been “uploaded” into a mammoth (!), which scientists have brought back from extinction. Damira had been an elephant activist, an anti-poaching conservationist. After she uploads her consciousness to a vaguely explained political lab, and after her subsequent death, and after the extinction of African elephants, scientists successfully bring back the mammoth. Unfortunately, the neo-mammoths don’t know how to behave like mammoths, on account of being previously extinct. Also, poachers still exist, and […]

Prairie Edge

Prairie Edge by Conor Kerr

December 26, 2025 by Fiat.Luxury Leave a Comment

Ezzy and Grey are two Métis cousins, the former just trying to survive and the latter a passionate activist for indigenous rights. Grey comes up with a plan that is a little crazy, to abduct the bison living in a national park and release them in downtown Edmonton (the capital city of Alberta, Canada.) Ezzy likes Grey and is along for the ride, gradually becoming more involved in Grey’s activist world. Hijinks ensue; things don’t quite go as planned. Ezzy and Grey have to figure […]

What even is art anyway?

The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson

December 15, 2025 by Fiat.Luxury Leave a Comment

I haven’t read any Brandon Sanderson, and there were sooooooo many reviews of this one saying that it’s a perfect novella, so I thought this is probably a good place to start. Shai is a Forger, which means she uses magic to make replicas, of a kind – she must know the object and understand what makes its “soul” and then use the Forging magic to copy or create. Forgery is considered heretical. Shai has been arrested and sentenced to death for theft. But it turns […]

My first Wharton, but I think others are probably better

Bunner Sisters by Edith Wharton

December 15, 2025 by Fiat.Luxury 3 Comments

Gosh guys I was hoping for a lighthearted read after my recent string of apocalyptic tear-jerkers, but this… was not that.  The titular Bunner Sisters are middle-aged spinster sisters in early 1900 New York City. They own a millinery/dress shop, appropriately called “Bunner Sisters” and take care of each other in a pleasant, if dull, routine. Ann Eliza buys a clock for her little sister Evelina for her birthday. The gift of the clock sets them down a path that ends (spoiler?) in what can […]

It Lasts Forever and Then It’s Over

It Lasts Forever and Then It's Over by Anne de Marcken

December 11, 2025 by Fiat.Luxury Leave a Comment

I just read a zombie book, and then I read a Last Man On Earth type of book, and I also read one about the Klan. This one came available in my library holds, so I checked it out and then I realized on page 1 that this was ALSO an apocalypse book and I was like, ugh, I don’t really want another apocalypse book right now, I kind of want a change of tone like maybe a romance? But I read it anyway.  This […]

Home-Grown Monsters

Ring Shout by P. Djeli Clark

December 10, 2025 by Fiat.Luxury 2 Comments

Who says all the fantasies with sword- wielding heroes and heroines have to be in Middle-earth, Westeros, or even our dreams of Africa past—what the Harlem Renaissance poet Countee Cullen reminisced as “copper sun or scarlet sea”?…Fantasy stories often feature characters in medieval settings taking on monsters. I figured a young Black woman in 1920s Georgia could be that character too. Even gave her her own sword. The monsters she has to fight are plucked right out of our own history—perhaps made more terrifying because […]

I'm not generally into shifter romances, but the title really is awesome.

That is definitely NOT what I am looking for in a romance.
