What She Left Behind ended up on my to read list thanks to my friend Mel. As I mentioned back in my review of Landline my participation in the CBR has inspired friends and coworkers to give me book suggestions out of the blue. I should have known when Mel’s parting words were “you should review this – oh and you are going to hate men at the end” that this may not be the most pleasant reading experience. It wasn’t. I don’t hate men […]
Dive Into CBR Book Club
Ok fellow Cannonballers, it’s time to dive into CBR Book Club! After several awesome reviews of Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven, we’re going to have a spoiler-heavy discussion of the book, and Mswas has asked me, faintingviolet, to moderate. We will be starting on Monday March 9th, to give those of you who have added it to your TBR one month to get it read before the discussion. One of the struggles I had with reviewing this book was not wanting to discuss the […]
A Time Worth Living In
You guys and gals should prepare yourself for even more reviews about Station Eleven. It’s simply fantastic. I’m rating it 4.5 stars and leaving myself the option of bumping it up to 5 stars later . I still don’t know because I’m too busy rolling around in all the feels. (And I have, because the further removed from the reading the MORE I have fallen in love with the work.) I have the impression that I’ve been reading a lot of dystopian future books lately. […]
“Open your eyes and see what you can with them before they close forever.”
I loved this one. And I think I might be the first one to review it for Cannonball… and I think some of you will love it too. I wasn’t really sure about All the Light We Cannot See when I decided to put a hold on it at my library (which has quickly escalated into an addiction in case you were wondering, I have approximately 20 books on holds which will deliver them to my library over the next 6 months). I based my […]
“The house smelled musty and damp, and a little sweet, as if it were haunted by the ghosts of long-dead cookies.”
I’ve read a couple of Neil Gaiman works before. I loved Ocean and the End of the Lane and had mostly good feelings about Neverwhere and that book, and its protagonist Richard Mayhew, has grown on me over time. (In fact, I suggest reading my friend Ale’s review from this year to get a better take on the book without the depression funk I was in in 2013). Late last year I saw badkittyuno’s review of American Gods and decided that it would be my […]
“Sooner or later, we all sit down to a banquet of consequences.”
I’m still not sure what I want to tell you about this book. A few days ago on Twitter there was a conversation amongst some Cannon ballers about which reviews are the hardest to write – the scathing or congratulatory. I weighed in that the scathing were easier to write, and the congratulatory ones take the most time to craft. What I forgot to take into account, and what would come home to roost this week, is that the “it had such great potential and […]
