faintingviolet's Reviews:

“Experience tells me that fiction is fiction and that hope leads to disappointment.”

When I reviewed Anna and the French Kiss I mentioned that while I would consider that book New Adult, I still had a tough time being invested in the romantic life of high school seniors. College, fine, that works for me. So when I reviewed the Contemporary/New Adult The Year We Fell Down I had no trouble with the age of the characters or believing their life in college. Which is what I kept thinking about when I settled on a rating of three stars […]

A Tour I Wasn’t Very Interested In.

::sigh:: I’m pretty sure the problem was me, and the fact that in the many years since this book was published I have watched many a show featuring Bourdain do exactly the kind of thing he originated in this work. In fact, one of the running asides in this book is his experiences with the camera crew that followed him as part of the series of the same name on The Food Network. Here’s Goodreads’ rundown of what to expect with this one: “The only […]

“It’s hard being weird. No—it’s hard living in a culture that makes it hard.”

September 9, 2015 by faintingviolet 4 Comments

On the surface, I am not the target audience for Felicia Day’s memoir You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost). I am a) not a gamer, not even a little, b) have never watched anything on her Geek & Sundry YouTube channel, or really very much on YouTube at all, c) have never watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer, d) I have only ever watched the first half of the first season of Supernatural, e) while aware of the Vaginal Fantasy book club on Goodreads I […]

An unique view on an already traveled path.

On the cover of the copy of this book I read the quote says “Ender, Katniss, and now Darrow.” Normally this would give me pause. While I’ve not read Ender’s Game, I know it and to a possibly lesser extent, The Hunger Games are tall measuring sticks. I have relegated lesser reviewed books to the proverbial dustbin for attempting these heights and not succeeding.  How would this character stack up? And do I want him to? Does it really matter? I had also broken my […]

A quiet little mystery.

September 4, 2015 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

Here we have a delightful convergence of events: Ms. Was wrote a review about a mystery series she loves a few weeks ago and the first book of that same series was on sale on Audible at nearly the same time. There are few easier reading decisions than this one – Yes! First in the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series is Still Life. Inspector Gamache is part of the Surêté du Québec. He and his team of investigators find themselves called to the scene of […]

I Only Wanted To Read About the Sisters

September 2, 2015 by faintingviolet 2 Comments

::sigh:: I am not the target audience for this book. Quick review: If you are in the mood to learn lots about pre-revolutionary Russia and the Romanov family, particularly the personal lives of Tsar Nicholas, his wife Alexandra, and their five children and you enjoy immaculately researched historical monographs then this is absolutely the book for you and you should find the time to read it. If, however, you are like me and already know A LOT about the social and political history of modern […]
